It's just normal, culturally.

i don't know.  i have a really hard time with this.  A lot of what i believe is scorned by others (which is fine), and i try not to out of hand write off what anyone else believes (apologies beforehand if i make you feel that way, or if i have inadvertently put words in your mouth).  But how would any parent feel if their child (or really anyone they cared about) was one of the people who fed this industry, contributed to this cultural norm - or however a person's wants to define it.

@Grunt - i'd be interested to hear your point of view on this.

By "contributed" do you mean the production of porn or viewing it?  Viewing porn is very normal culturally in young adults.  I don't think any parent would want their child to produce it, but it's probably only a matter of time before that is normal, too.  I support that with the fact that porn stars now leave the industry and move into other public careers successfully.

It worked fine for me. After all, I had to pay for college somehow.

Thank-you @Grunt.  Production.  i hope you are not right about that becoming normal.  i've read some books about people who've gotten involved in that industry - and have yet to hear one who wasn't severely damaged by it in a way that didn't affect the rest of their lives.  In fairness, i guess the ones who aren't do not write books - but i question whether anyone could get come out on the other side without being emotionally and spiritually shredded.

i do not mean that to be a judgment on my part about the hearts of people who, for whatever reason, view pornographic material.  After all, i no doubt wear clothes that were likely made by people working in sweat shops and horrific conditions - and the parallels between the two are not trivial.

You probably learned more paying for college than attending college.

I learned three things: 1) College is a rip off 2) only idiots think college makes you smarter and 3) often times people who didn't go to college have mammoth chips on their shoulder about not doing so. Not personal to @Grunt or anyone else,  just what I've seen.

My opinios are: Porn and masturbation are selfish by nature.  They are sinful in marriage and for single people.  My opinion is that my marriage is a covenant not only with my spouse but with God.  Women could give their consent to their husbands to self indulge but the truth is there is great potential for alienation, the destruction of the marriage, and possibly broken covenants.

If the original post was about drinking a beer every now and then and being able to handle it without over consumption.  Wouldn't that seem like justification for sin.  Maybe the wife could give consent for the husband to drink a little beer.  Wouldn't he still be breaking the word of wisdom?   All things in moderation is a lie.

The idea of sex with someone else even if only in our minds means we have already committed adultry in our hearts according to the savior.  Sexual sin is grievous and not to be made casual.

I dunno.  Has anyone really tried to define "porn"?  I knew a woman that was a By The Book Catholic, she was so arrogant, and according to her everyone is destined for Hades but her.  Her view was, if a picture showed skin, it was pornographic.

To me, there is art and then there is porn.  The difference being the intent of the artist and possibly the model.  Keeping in mind a quote I snagged from a liberal arts professor back in 1988- "How can people develop wholesome clean thoughts when they are taught that immorality is ok and a lack of ethics is permissible?  People can only harvest from what is planted."  From my experience, if you are taught and raised that all nakedness is sexual, then that is the way you view all nakedness.  But if you grow up with the view that nakedness being sexual is merely perspective, same thing.

The original post wasn't condoning anything, it was an explanation.  It's only a sin to those who serve God.  Most of the rest of the world views it as normal.

You mean you had to pay to attend that raggedy bunch of run-down buildings that was mistakenly called a college?

Actually I told them to bill some guy in Australia.
