  1. I think that there's still a stigma when it comes to mental health treatment, especially with clinical depression that often isn't able to be treated by LDS Social Services, since it often requires a combination of therapy and medication. I'm not criticizing the LDS counseling program at all, for minor things, it probably is effective, but depression and other mental illnesses are more severe, as the brain chemistry is different. In a way, such illnesses are like diabetes, it can be controlled with proper treatment.
  2. I hate to say it, but "Hold to the Rod" has some adult connotations.
  3. I actually like the new layout, but I've seen on other boards where people complained about changes, even when it was done after the old format was hacked into on a board I used to post on.
  4. Well said! He definitely did some bad things in his life, but cancer is not a nice way to die. I for one, wouldn't wish cancer on my worst enemy, nor would most people. The negativity is like some anti-Mormon saying something negative about Thomas Monson when he dies. Mr. Kennedy will be judged in time for what he's done in his life, as we all will.
  5. I think in other Christian churches, people volunteer because THEY chose to do so, and it involves things like working in the food bank which is available to anyone who needs it, regardless of where they go to church. Many churches also donate baby clothes and other items to battered women's shelters and other items to homeless shelters.
  6. That's what I think as well, and one other practice that is misunderstood is the idea that non-LDS family members aren't allowed inside the temple for weddings. On the surface, it might seem as offensive to non-members, but since the wedding is such an important thing for LDS, they act defensive.
  7. That's definitely true when it comes to COBRA insurance that is available when someone is laid off, since it's extremely expensive. As a result, when someone is laid off and loses their health insurance as a result, they couldn't afford to buy their own health insurance. In California, the unemployment rate rose this month, while in the rest of the country, the rate went down.
  8. I actually went without power a couple of days ago because the electric company was doing some repairs, but they gave advanced notice so I was able to shut down my computer before going to bed the night before the outage. The power came back on just as it was starting to get dark, but I had some battery powered lanterns and flashlights ready in case. In fact, I keep a flashlight on my nightstand all the time in case there's an outage caused by a storm or earthquake in the middle of the night.
  9. Her shorts weren't THAT short, and in my heathen(non-LDS) opinion, is just fine for Arizona in August, even at the Grand Canyon, it can be hot. She looks like she works out, so I think she should have the right to bare arms, in reference to the sleeveless things she's worn. Now, if her shorts were short enough to where her butt cheeks are hanging out, then there would be an issue, but last I checked, knees weren't private parts.
  10. In the LA area for the past 3 days, there was a free clinic for the uninsured, run by a charity that usually provides medical care in third world countries. I'm just saying that something needs to be done, but I'm not sure exactly what. At free clinic, scenes from the Third World -- latimes.com
  11. My guess is that this will be vetoed as the first "Harvey Milk Day" bill was.
  12. I think Carson would be a different mission since it's another city, but since I'm not LDS, I have no idea for sure where the mission boundaries are. One other thing about Long Beach is that there are many Cambodian immigrants who have joined the LDS church. The gay neighborhoods are also along 4th St and Broadway just before you get to the downtown area.
  13. Don't get married before age 25 Wait at least a year or more before you get married so you really know your spouse. Wait until you have finished your college degree before having children, it's easier. Laugh out loud, and often since it will keep you healthier and reduce the risk of depression. Never marry someone with bad credit, as yours will be ruined. Don't post anything on Facebook, Myspace, or a blog that you wouldn't want your current or future boss as it could lead to you not being hired, or fired.
  14. I actually agree, since the "Cash for Clunkers" program was too successful to the point that it ran out of money in less than a week and has been canceled. Also, Social Security isn't going to be around by the time those of us under 50 are ready to retire. I just hope that people who have health insurance that they like will be able to keep it, especially if it's better than what the government could offer.
  15. I tend to view cops in a positive light, and even have some former cops who are good friends of mine. The way I see it, if you're polite to them, they're most likely going to be polite to you in return. Sure, there are bad ones, but most of them are good people.
  16. The only thing I know is that the Mayan calendar will end in that year, but we won't know when the actual end of the world will happen. People have always thought that Christ would return in their lifetime, so the "last days" thing is nothing new.
  17. I think the hair dryer thing is a bit silly, as if someone doesn't believe in the validity of their baptism, it doesn't mean anything anymore.
  18. I thought this video was funny, and a clever way to celebrate a wedding.
  19. I also eat Skittles or M&M's by the color. I have to make sure the doors and windows are locked before I can fall asleep. So far, I haven't started checking the stove burners to make sure they're off, which is what my dad also does.
  20. Money can take care of some basic needs such as food for your family, and a roof over their heads to protect them from the weather. Wanting a car that runs well and doesn't need costly repairs all the time is a good thing because it can allow someone to get to and from work to provide for their families. Things like cable TV, the internet at home, and cell phones are luxury items.
  21. No offense, but until I see this in other news sources, I don't trust it. When it's reported by other news agencies, especially the Associated Press, then I'll believe it. That's just my opinion, so feel free to flame away.
  22. I loved Animaniacs, and the Quake song is a classic for me because I've always lived in earthquake country.
  23. It's been said that the easiest way to rob a bank is to own one.
  24. Fireworks are illegal in my city, but it's hard to enforce since there are neighboring cities that allow them to be purchased. There are plenty of local firework shows run by professionals to chose from on the 4th. In cities where it's legal to sell fireworks, the sales start 2-3 days before the 4th, and the booths are torn down on the 5th and not seen again until the last week of June the following year.
  25. That's true, outside of Utah, Idaho, and parts of Arizona, the LDS population is a tiny minority. As a result, there isn't enough of a market to make opening a LDS bookstore worth the cost of running it. Even though Orange County is mostly Republican and conservative, most people who live there attend other Christian churches. Besides, it's easier to order books and other items online than to pay for gas or airfare to Salt Lake City.
