People who believes that America the Beautiful is the national anthem should be the last people complaining about a lack of patriotism.

Marrying a member of the LDS
Swiper replied to InlandPirate's topic in Marriage and Relationship Advice
I see a lot of me in you. I grew up atheist/agnostic (my parents hated religion with a passion), but I later married into a Mormon family. I got a lot of pressure from my in-laws about joining the church and I wanted to please my spouse so badly. I also found the spirit of the Mormon community quite attractive and in the end I pretty much looked for any kind of sign (real or perceived) as an excuse to join the church. I enjoyed my church participation for several years despite my inner doubts, but after a decade it became more and more difficult to suppress it. The last five years there developed a direct and clear conflict between the values of the church and what I personally perceived to be right and wrong. It came to a boiling point last year and I officially resigned my membership and left the church. While my wife accepted my decision with grace and understanding, it was still very hard on her as her vision of our eternal future collapsed in front of her eyes. I feel bad about hurting her feelings but I had to do it. I just couldn't remain a member and look myself in the mirror anymore. In retrospective, it would have been better if I had never succumbed to pressure and joined the church in the first place. She married me as a non-member and by joining the church I gave her false hopes and in the end a check that she couldn't cash in due to insufficient funds. The bottom line: Stay authentic no matter what. -

Whatever you do, do not convert just to please her. Only join the church if you truly have a testimony about the truthfulness of the gospel. -
I believe that man is naturally a moral man. It is in our genes to get along and cooperate with other human beings. We do not need religion to have morality.

Do you look for famous people who self-identify as Mormon or is it enough that they can be found in the church records?

Wrong. The correct answer is #1 as I don't own a painting by Boyd K. Packer. I'm part of a group that do monthly visits to captured Al-Qaeda members and who are currently in the custody of the US government.

1. Become more involved in Social Justice. 2. Start a rescue group for Miniature Schnauzers. 3. Write a book.

Mirkwood: Number 3 seems too obvious ... I pick number 2. 1. I have a painting by Boyd K. Packer hanging in my living room. 2. I hang out with members from Al-Qaeda once a month. 3. I proposed to my wife after dating online for a month and without seeing her in real life first.

Why on earth do you want this abusive individual to be around your children? He might be the biological father but he is definitely not fit to be a 'dad'. I honestly think that your children would be better off without this poor example of a man and father in their lives. If you are concerned about your children's need for a male role model in their lives you will need to look elsewhere and drop the illusion that the 'sperm donor' will ever step up and take responsibility. I'm sorry if I come off as harsh but your story sounds too much like my sister's story. Good luck.

I'm here to observe church culture in action. I have resigned from the church and I no longer get first-hand experience of the Mormon faith. I thought being on this forum would give me an insight into the current opinions and attitudes of my old ward members. I still hold on to a feeble hope that things in the church will change for the better, but I keep on getting deeply disappointed. I probably should just close this account and "let it go".

I suspect this thread unfortunately will end up having the opposite effect of what anatess intended.

I think you and your husband should seek professional marriage counseling to help resolve your issues. I suspect that he might have issues with his relationship to the church and that he has started to resent his family's participation in church activities. The fact that he is active in the church does not necessary mean that everything is fine. I know plenty of people who remain active only because they fear negative reactions from their spouses, children, and extended family. Him feeling unable to live an authentic life could explain him lashing out against you. That could also explain the problem he is having with how you have changed since you got married. Try to ask him in a non-accusatory way how he feels about the church. Of course this is just my suspecion and I could be completely wrong.

I don't have any problem her accessing my stuff if she got a valid purpose for it (find an old address, delete Amazon email about surprise gift, retrieve account information, etc). I would have a big problem if she start going through my emails just to spy on what I am doing and who I am talking to. While I got nothing to hide, I still value my privacy.

My email/text/FB/chat/etc is none of my wife business and hers is not mine. I expect her to respect my right to privacy as much as I respect hers. We know eachother's passwords to email and FB, but I expect her to only access my stuff in a bonafide emergency. We would have serious issues if I found her spying one me. Due to work we do live in separate states and only see each other 4-5 times a year. So our whole lives are pretty much separate. We do have joint finances and she is the one responsible for paying my credit card (so she knows what I spend money on unless I use cash).

That's five minutes I will never get back. It was quite horrible to be honest.

Apparently I speak like somebody from Alabama or Georgia. Most similar cities are Montgomery, Birmingham, and Atlanta. I have never lived in either state, but my in-laws (for the last 20 years) are from the border between Georgia and Alabama. I guess that I should blame them.
