  1. I was taught that cowboy boots were as fine as or even better than the typical dress shoes for church!
  2. I think the key here is explaining the situation to the bishopric, and on the flip side having compassion and good listening skills. (as applied to the many situations in this thread) To trouble things further, everyone seems to have a different button of where pushyness begins or if it is just good natured inclusion. Invites are good, they should be extended graciously and refused graciously, then respected graciously. To be called out on temple worthiness because of lack of attendance at activities is unacceptable.
  3. It can be very difficult to have a constructive conversation with anyone monster painting. Your post is a good reminder to me to try and avoid doing the same xD

    Aldi's Ginger Beer

This sounds delightful! I will have to go out and see if I can find it! Quite the fan of ginger beer
  5. As I typed this up my thoughts rested upon the idea of taking a break when needed. Certainly helps to cool down and have a level head about things. I think I should try to spend some more time thinking and expressing gratitude for what the gospel has given me.
  6. Most LDS members would probably go with the typical understanding that Cain is the son of Adam.
  7. What is a buzz group? (Why does this sound like something that may bring someone like me apprehension)
  8. There is certainly a scriptural pattern to Satan trying to stop good things from happening. But don't worry you are in good company with many of the great prophets of the past!
  9. Hello All. Recently I find myself getting far to worked up over certain issues of politics, and religion when someone has strong opinions contrary and often somewhat antagonistic to my own. It seems like the internal calm I used to maintain is easily turned into a raging fire lately. I am a firm believer is sharing differing beliefs, thoughts, ideas, world views, and experiences. How do you find that you keep yourself from getting engulfed in the misery others seem to enjoy spreading? How has applying the Gospel of Jesus Christ helped you?
  10. I have had the experience of having a generic interview with leadership, and a terrible interview. Leaving it feeling crushed. It was a chance for me to humble myself. Subsequent interviews weren't as bad, but still had me on the defense. As I got to know the leader better, and as they got to know me things changed. I changed. For what it's worth.
  11. Lectures on faith by Joseph Smith. There were others involved in the publication but it is an amazing book published during Joseph Smiths time.
  12. I appreciate teachers trying to change things up. Nothing distracts more than monotone reading from a manual. (following the manual is fine)
  13. I can see how members would see this as good. I can also see this meme being used as a tool for mockery. Funny how perspective can change the whole meaning behind something.
  14. I generally agree with you Vort, but considering the number of people whom i've heard say it's not an easy read, it's worth noting just in case.
  15. Of Faith and Reason 81 evidences of the Book of Mormon by Michael Ash Google Books Amazon Deseret Book There are others, but this book is a very good brief overview of quite a few things. If there is anything in particular that you are interested in there are also other books. You can also find quite a few books on the maxwell institue website. Anything by Hugh Nibley is good, though technical (Find and read it HERE)
  16. Disagreement can be different than just being contentious, it can come from differing perspective, experience, feelings, culture, upbringing, and knowledge. There is nothing wrong with differing world views. (I will admit there are limits to this though)
  17. There are different words, less formal that they indeed do use, but not that one specifically. Actually generally older people, more often women use words like that, or little firetruck(or man, w/e[whatever] it is) etc... Complaining about slang, or the evolution of language happens pretty much every generation. Rather than looking down on someone for being unschooled, a farm boy, possibly with little education or different culture, or even being slow and hesitant with speech. I think it might be better to look at the heart of what they are saying.
  18. Some early Mormons actually had no problem with the cross as a symbol using it in clothing, and on some of our chapels. I don't think it's something to be overly concerned about.
  19. I think there are some as far as i'm aware, currently unverifiable assumptions. (works for both sides of the coin) How do you know that a small segment of the population is more invested and engaged, rather than con'ed and bribed into voting a certain way, Or that a small oligarchy would better represent the whole, even if their interests were at odds with the rest?
  20. Rather than a post modern nihilism, or even an existential-nihilism, this is why I like pragmatism as a response philosophically. Pragmatism can be quite compatible to religion.
  21. According to LDS theology Gods glory is through all his creation, especially his children. (not limited by, but through) The father looks down towards the child in loving care and guidance, the child looks up at the father for loving nurture. (I'm sure there is a more poetic, beautiful way of saying that)
