  1. 2nd amendment rights are not the issue here. Gun safety and knowledge of how to handle a weapon around police officers is the issue. You don't EVER reach for your real of fake gun when apprehended by police. You tell them where the weapon is, keep your hands on your head, and let them confiscate the weapon.
  2. So do you feel unworthy to receive a blessing because you have been denied by those you have asked? If so, that is Satan trying to dissuade you from finding the spiritual guidance you need. Priesthood holders have a large responsibility to hold that power, and may not always be worthy to use it. I can only imagine how hard it is, especially for YSA men, to be dealing with their own battles and be approached to use their priesthood authority to give a blessing and have to say no because they themselves are not worthy to give it or are mentally incapable of doing so. I understand being in a small YSA ward, I myself am in that same situation. Please reach out to your Bishop for a blessing. That is what he is there for. If your feelings of unworthiness have a deeper root than the feeling of inadequacy as a result of being denied by priesthood holders for a blessing, then you can discuss that with him as well. Nothing will ever keep you from being able to receive a priesthood blessing. Those who are not of our faith receive them all the time.
  3. What will be different about this movement, if it ever happens, is that acting on pedophilia is not accepted by society, and I hope and pray it never will be, whereas acting on homosexual feelings is 100% accepted. The bolded sentence in the article states it all, "What the pedophiles are complaining about is that they cannot go about openly professing their desire to molest children" The argument always made by the LGBTQ community was that having a homosexual relationship wasn't affecting anyone's life, so why did it matter whether or not it was legalized. That argument cannot be made with pedophilia. It DOES affect someone else's life if we're treating it like homosexuality. So their only argument would be to have the ability to be open about saying they are a pedophile, whether they act on those feelings or not (except the latter is illegal). Of course as it has probably been discussed on this forum, the next change in family and marriage definitions in our society will most likely be polygamy. When will it happen, I'm not sure. But my guess will be the next 10 years at the most.
  4. I don't see them as extravagant or expensive at all. Do they cost a lot of money to build? Of course, all buildings do. The interior though is not extravagant, but fitting for the beauty that is symbolic of what the temple is for. Not just because it is a house of God, but because of the purpose behind the ordinances performed and the symbolism behind everything.
  5. It's hard not to start thinking this way. The way this whole event has been reported is sketchy and there are so many loose ends that are unknown.
  6. Madam Secretary: my family and I love this show. First season is on Netflix. It's on CBS, but when we miss an episode on live TV it is available on CBS's website to watch. If you like politically related shows, you'll love this one. Prison Break: Guilty pleasure for me due to my college education. A decent show though if you like shows that have twists and turns that you don't see coming, even if you are that person who can predict everything that will happen in a show. Accurate depiction of prison violence, so I'd definitely give it a PG-13 rating. MasterChef: love cooking shows, and love Gordon Ramsey. Available on Hulu. A lot more interesting than other reality cooking shows IMO. So You Think You Can Dance: Actually very entertaining to watch, even if you aren't a fan of dance or do it yourself. This season is for little kids though (8-13) so it's a little different from previous seasons. Still skeptical so far, but a very family-friendly show at the moment.
  7. There are more LDS people who are sympathetic and loving towards the LGBTQ community than there are those who speak ill of them. But sadly, you hear more about the latter. If you're trying to be a true disciple of Christ, you love your brother. No if's, and's, or but's about it. Those who don't follow that commandment will be held accountable before God. And when people do treat you badly, forgive them. For if Christ could forgive the individuals who tortured and killed him, we can forgive those who offend us with their words.
  8. If you're making the correlation that because you don't have any physical proof of Christ being married means that marriage isn't as important as doctrine and revelation has proven it to be, then I think there is a different problem here than just the question of whether Christ was married. I understand why you're making that correlation from your previous statements of how we are supposed to live a Christ-like life, but it goes a little beyond what the purpose of that statement is. The importance of marriage and the Plan of Salvation is to become like our Heavenly Father, who we do know has a wife. Thus, to become like them, we must enter into the most sacred covenant. So yes, marriage is essential to the doctrine of the Church. Whether or not Christ married in this life isn't important for our own salvation. How He lived (i.e., his actions towards others, his charity, kindness, love) and the acts He performed for us are what we are to focus on.
  9. I'm not sure, Japanese culture is very centered on family honor and respect. It could potentially have that effect but I would be surprised if it did.
  10. I watched Me Before You. Read the book, so I knew what to expect in the movie. Still didn't stop the tears from coming! Great movie, I recommend it.
  11. Where are these capris from?? I've been searching everywhere for capris that are that long but that don't go all the way to my calf.
  12. Yes, I know exactly what it is. The SIZE of the carniessa tops and bottoms fit perfect for my body. Therefore, I and maybe others do not desire to have special sizes made when there is a specific style (carniessa) that fits just right. But if the OP would like to determine a specialized size for herself, then maybe that would work best for her!
  13. I think a lot of us are aware of the special orders section on the site. For myself, the carinessa style fits perfectly and is a fabric that I prefer over the others. So I feel no need to special order a different style to ensure it fits properly when they have a style that is more form fitting for my body, which is what the other styles lack for myself. I'm sure many others use special order--everyone's body is unique and doesn't always fall into the "standard" size chart.
  14. The carinessa tops and bottoms are more form-fitting and make me feel less "frumpy" in other styles. I'm really petite so everything drowns me, so the carinessa is really nice to have if you want a more fitted look that works with your figure. Maybe that might help! There's a lot of good advice on this form though about the importance of the garment---and even when we're living righteous lives and attending the temple regularly, we sometimes need that reminder of what the purpose of this garment truly is.
  15. Alright cool. So we can stop talking in circles and have verified what we both mean. Depends on how you define "handle it".
  16. That's why I said if you take the perspective of "healthy" behavior, or maybe even socially approved behavior, and compare it to someone who may seem "different", those in the general population may be able to see a difference. I think a lot of people are aware of individuals suffering from mental illness, but there's a stigma associated with it and people are afraid to bring it up or talk about it for fear of offending or not knowing what to say. We have a much better understanding of disorders such as Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder than we did just 10 years ago. I don't think we'll ever have a complete understanding of it because it's so individualized, but I wouldn't say that psychologists or psychiatrists don't know how to treat it or understand it. There's different therapeutic treatments because these disorders are so individualized. The brain is so complex and personable to each of us that expecting a treatment to work the same on everyone isn't plausible. Those suffering from PTSD find a lot of help in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but there are some that don't react the same way and need different treatments to help relieve them of their symptoms. Funding, research and education will always help the field of psychology, especially as it's becoming more socially recognized as just as important as medical problems. I was just disagreeing that mental illnesses can't be "seen". I believe they can be. With the right viewpoint.
  17. I'd have to disagree. As someone studying psychology and human behavior, mental illnesses can easily be seen if you know what to look for. It's the general population that has a hard time "seeing" it. There are a lot of philosophical arguments about normal behavior vs. abnormal behavior, but if you take it from the standpoint of someone who has "healthy" behavior and compare them to someone suffering from a mental illness, you can see a stark difference. Can we treat it as easily as something tangible like a broken arm? No, because the symptoms vary from person to person and each treatment varies in outcome for each person. But that just means to me that we need more research, funding, and education on these mental illnesses so we can better understand them and therefore treat them.
  18. She probably doesn't realize this is getting under your skin this much. I would reply saying "thank you for the tips. I feel I have a good understanding of the lesson and if I need any help in the future I will let you know." Hopefully this will give her the hint that you don't want the extra help anymore and that you're comfortable with the lessons. I doubt it has anything more to do with just that she wants to feel like she's helping you prepare as much as she can since you have such a demanding job, but she doesn't recognize that it's coming across differently for you. But I don't know the relationship between you and her as well as the other teachers. Hopefully this can be worked out!
  19. Stephanie Nielson has also shared a wonderful, heartbreaking story of her recovery from being burned over 80% of her body. She is just amazing. http://www.amazon.com/Heaven-Here-Incredible-Triumph-Everyday/dp/1401341985/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458975565&sr=8-1&keywords=Heaven+is+Here
  20. Very interesting insight! Thanks for sharing.
  21. I'm no where near as knowledgeable of the scriptures as the majority of you. But my simple understanding has always been: for anyone to receive salvation, they must accept Jesus Christ as their Savior, which includes utilizing his atonement to repent of their sins. This will happen in this life and in the next. Anyone who does not accept Him, whether in this life or the next, will remain in outer darkness. As for the Sons of Perdition, my knowledge is limited on the details of that process, but I know it cannot be an easy one.
