Hymnbook hymns:

Lead, Kindly Light

Come, Rejoice

The Spirit of God (I never used to like this one...it was too ubiquitous...but I live in the Kirtland, OH Stake, and let me tell you -- it's a whole different experience singing that here.)

Come, O Thou King of Kings

Adam-Ondi-Ahman

Beautiful Zion, Built Above

Be Still My Soul

Guide Us, O Thou Great Jehovah

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

O Savior, Thou Who Wearest a Crown (the lyrics and the music are a little weird, causing the singers to draw out the vowels a little odd, but the music is beautiful.)

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

Sing Praise to Him

Non-current-hymnbook-hymns (or songs that sound hymn-like in that they are worshipful):

Come Thou Fount

This is the Christ

Consider the Lilies

Pretty basic question - what are your favorite hymns?

I love Redeemer of Israel, How Firm a Foundation, Spirit of God, Come Come Ye Saints... I tend to like the more rousing ones! ^_^

Called to serve.

Israel Israel God is calling.

I need thee every hour.

Did yu think to pray.

Count your blessings.

Nearer my God to thee.

It used to be "Come Come Ye Saints". I even saw the Mormon Tabernacle Chior sing the song this past summer. There have been major life changes this year which led me to become inactive. The only affiliation I have with the church is through this web-site.

I no-longer appreciate or like any hymn the church sings.

Popcorn popping on the apricot tree. Anything sung by the Primary kids because they know how to read music.

Unfortunately this ability is lost upon graduation from primary.

Whether a song is Brightfuly, thoughtfully, joyfully , vigorously, or fervently they are all sung and played the same.

For the record

This is vigorously.

Here are 3 of my favorites, linked to MP3 audio, including my favorite part of each:

The Morning Breaks (#1, Listen as MP3)

Verse 1:

The morning breaks, the shadows flee;

Lo, Zion's standard is unfurled!

The dawning of a brighter day (2x),

Majestic rises on the world.

Lead, Kindly Light (#97, Listen as MP3)

Verse 2:

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou

Shouldst lead me on.

I loved to choose and see my path; but now,

Lead thou me on!

I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,

Pride ruled my will.

Remember not past years.

Master, the Tempest Is Raging (#105, Listen as MP3)

Chorus:

The winds and the waves shall obey thy will:

Peace, be still.

Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea

Or demons or men or whatever it be,

No waters can swallow the ship where lies

The Master of ocean and earth and skies

They all shall sweetly obey thy will:

Peace, be still; peace, be still.

They all shall sweetly obey thy will:

Peace, peace, be still.

Of course, I don't know your particular problems, but many times we blame the Church for problems in our life. When we take a closer look we see the problems have come from other forces. Before you make such a life changing decision, I hope you will talk to your Bishop or Stake President. It can't hurt. They can't force you to come back to Church. So, you have nothing to lose and perhaps a great deal to gain. May God bless you whatever your decision.

"Onward Christian Soldiers" is sung in English-speaking LDS congregations. Don't recognize any of the others.

A hymn set to "Danny Boy"? Strange. But no more so, I suppose, than a hymn set to "Scotland the Brave".

D&C scripture mastery, to the tune of "Scotland the Brave/Hail to the Prophet":

Search these commandments, for they are true and faithful,

And the prophecies and promises which are in them shall

All be fulfilled. What I, the Lord, have spoken,

I have spoken, and I excuse not myself.

And though the heavens and the earth pass away

My word shall not pass away,

But shall all be fulfilled,

Whether by mine own voice or the voice of my servants,

It is the same. -D&C 1:37-38

Ave Maria-I love when someone sings this in a solo performance

Which version? This is not one we sing in LDS services (obviously -- it's a prayer to Mary), but it is a personal favorite and a bit of a guilty pleasure. I first learned to love this as a song from Pavarotti's rendition of Schubert's version*. Some years later, I totally fell in love with

. I have since discovered
, which is quite pretty.

As a side "benefit", if you want to call it that, to loving this song, I have memorized the Latin version of the Catholic prayer Ave Maria**. Yay.

* The Mormon Tabernacle Choir actually did perform Schubert's Ave Maria, but with the words changed and with the title Heavenly Father.

** The prayer is based mainly on Gabriel's "Annunciation" visit to Mary: "Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." If you know any Latin at all, even if (like mine) it's pretty weak, you can easily follow the prayer. Very, very Catholic indeed, what with supplicating "Holy Mary, God's mother", to "pray for us now and at the time of our death":

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui Iesus. Sancta Maria, mater Dei, ora pro nobis nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen. (The mater Dei part isn't in the song. You just have to remember it :).)
