Maureen Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 A few people beat me to it, so I will give my agreement to these ones: (David Bowie)Hallelujah by KD Lang over the original (by Leonard Cohen).Johnny Cash's version of Hurt is outstanding (NIN). And I will add:Celine Dion - All By Myself (Eric Carmen) M. Quote
Moksha Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy expresses wringing the best out of a good song.YouTube - Eva Cassidy - Fields of GoldHer rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, shows the same process and ability. Quote
pam Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 Landslide- Dixie Chicks : original artist Fleetwood Mac No way...no one does that song better than Stevie Nicks. Quote
bytebear Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 Here are some good ones for a laugh, although I don;t know if a classical piece is considered a cover. Quote
marshac Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 Time After Time vs I love the 80s... Quote
Cassie Posted March 20, 2010 Report Posted March 20, 2010 It's pretty hard to top an original, but here are some covers that I really enjoy!*Pixie Lott - (Kings of Leon) -OK, so there are three by Jenny Ondreyka, but I LOVE anything she covers!-*Jenny Ondreyka from Heroes on Parade - (Paramore)*Jenny Ondreyka from Heroes on Parade - (Sea Wolf)*Jenny Ondreyka from Heroes on Parade - (The Fall of Troy) <--I like this one 1000X more than the original*Lilly Allen - I'm Outta Time (Oasis) Quote
ADoyle90815 Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 I like the Dixie Chicks version of Landslide, although I still love the original version. Another cover that I like has also been mentioned, Stone Temple Pilots Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin) Quote
Nikkie85 Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 I love Frente cover of Bizarre Love Triangle although I love the version by New Order also. The lead singer or Frente has such a haunting voice. Quote
Maureen Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 David Archuleta's version of Imagine (John Lennon). M. Quote
Wingnut Posted March 22, 2010 Author Report Posted March 22, 2010 David Archuleta's version of Imagine (John Lennon).M.I would agree with you except that I can't stand the song at all. Period. Quote
Blackmarch Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Are there any songs that have been redone or covered, where you actually like the cover version better? They say you can't beat a classic, and in some cases that's true (think Uncle Kracker doing "Drift Away" or Jessica Simpson with "Take My Breath Away"), but not in all.Feel free to include links if you want.I like Masters of Chant's version of metallicas Nothing else matters a little more than the original...Saxons redoing of the Court of the Krimson King is real good, I don't like it better but it is up there. Also the version of "I need a hero" done in shrek 2 is better than the original. Dravin Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Finally got some speakers, that's not the version. Quote
InquisitiveSoul Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Hey Wisc, I'd forgot about You Really Got Me. Van Halen made it their own so much so I forget it's a Kink's song. Quote
RipplecutBuddha Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Don't Be Cruel, Cheap Trick (original by Elvis Presley) Shout, Disturbed (original by Tears for Fears) ....and I'll think of others as soon as I get some sleep..... Quote
Maureen Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 I would agree with you except that I can't stand the song at all. Period.I've never really been a fan of John Lennon (Beatles yes but not Lennon individually) and Imagine can have that over the top feel to it, so it's never been a favorite of mine but Archuleta's version really got my attention.M. After a few months, I realized that I didn't like the song at all, though I still enjoyed his version better than the original. Quote
Honor Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 Oooo sorry to be hung up on the mashups, but..... There's one part with the chorus where the timing messes with your head, but I like it! Quote
daenvgiell Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 The Shrek version of Best Days by Matt White, there's like one word different or something like that, but I much prefer it that way Quote
gabelpa Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 Come On Eileen, as done by Save Ferris. I like the added Oomph they give it Quote
Wingnut Posted March 24, 2010 Author Report Posted March 24, 2010 Landslide- Dixie Chicks : original artist Fleetwood MacNo way...no one does that song better than Stevie Nicks.Pam, I agree with you, but Ruth, if you're going to pick a cover of this song that you like, don't pick the Dixie Chicks. The Smashing Pumpkins did a really great version of it in the 90s. I heard it the other night...great acoustic cover. Quote

My contributions:Metallica: Die Die My Darling (The Misfits/Glenn Danzig)Metallica: Turn the Page (Bob Seger)Blue Öyster Cult: Astronomy, Some Enchanted Evening version (okay, a band can't really cover its own song, but this is by far the best version)Jimi Hendrix: All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan)Dave Matthews Band: All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan)Guns 'n Roses: Knockin' on Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan)Peter, Paul, and Mary: Blowin' in the Wind (Bob Dylan)Chad Mitchell Trio: Blowin' in the Wind (Bob Dylan)Chad Mitchell Trio: The Golden Vanity (traditional folk)Beach Boys: Sloop John B (folk)Roberta Flack: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Peggy Seeger) Quote
