Yeah, I'm pretty suspicious of his sincerity, as well. I remember an interview with some of his followers, men who said, in essence, "We joined Jeffs' group because it allowed us a way to have sex with lots of different women." As someone who believes that true principle of plural marriage was revealed by God, I found this statement a repulsive vindication of the worst and most scurrilous charges brought against my ancestors for their attempts to live the commandments of God. Makes me sick. It's a mockery of God's word and nothing more. I don't believe there's an ounce of sincerity in any of it.

I'm not sure that's true. I think he found a way to gain all of the power he could, and take advantage of young girls and women under the guise of being a prophet. Anything I have read or seen about him doesn't show me a man of faith.

Any person that does such is not a man of faith, but that doesn't mean he doesn't genuinely believe it. There's been crazies before that have done the same thing and really believe it.

From what I can gather, Jeff's' health is shot to heck from fasting so much and he has literally worn out his knees from praying in his cell so much.

At the risk of deploying some pop-armchair psychology: I think at this point, he is sincere. But I think he got to this point because he lied to himself so much in the past. He lives in a psychosis of his own making over which he no longer has any control.

From what I remember from college psychology, if people say the same lie over and over again, they tend to start believing it. Our memories are kind of weird like that. I remember when I first heard that theory, I thought it may apply to guys like Warren Jeffs.

Whatever his reasons, all we can really do is pray for him and his followers.

On another subject, I do wonder where they get the red thing from. It seems like scriptural accounts of the post-resurrection Jesus, if they mention his color of choice at all, usually go with white.

It's not the post-resurrection clothes that drive this teaching. It's specifically the color He wears when He returns for the Second Coming.

I have heard that Mormons are not to wear certain colors... such as red for example.

Is this true? If so, why?

Thank you!

If that were true my LDS friend would be so sad; red is her favourite colour. :)

It comes from section 133 of our Doctrine and Covenants; a rather apocalyptic revelation given to Joseph Smith in 1833:

46 And it shall be said: Who is this that cometh down from God in heaven with dyed garments; yea, from the regions which are not known, clothed in his glorious apparel, traveling in the greatness of his strength?

47 And he shall say: I am he who spake in righteousness, mighty to save.

48 And the Lord shall be red in his apparel, and his garments like him that treadeth in the wine-vat.

49 And so great shall be the glory of his presence that the sun shall hide his face in shame, and the moon shall withhold its light, and the stars shall be hurled from their places.

 50 And his voice shall be heard: I have trodden the wine-press alone, and have brought judgment upon all people; and none were with me;

51 And I have trampled them in my fury, and I did tread upon them in mine anger, and their blood have I sprinkled upon my garments, and stained all my raiment; for this was the day of vengeance which was in my heart.

Warren Jeffs instituted the practice among the FLDS of no one wearing red, as a sign of respect for Jesus sometime in the past couple of decades (the FLDS didn't do this before Warren took the reins).  The mainline LDS Church would say that that's going way overboard . . . but the notion of Jesus wearing red at the Second Coming is sound (if obscure) doctrine for us as well.

Not just LDS, Joseph is building on past prophets. Isaiah 63:1-2:

Who is this that acometh from bEdom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

Wherefore art thou ared in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the bwinefat?

Revelation 19:13-15:

13 And he was aclothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his bname is called The cWord of God.

14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, aclothed in fine linen, white and clean.

15 aAnd out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall brule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the cwinepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

After a quick glance through the book of revelation, there's also probably some reference to this going on here:

Rev 19:11-16

11 Then, in my vision, heaven opened, and I saw a white horse appear. Its rider bore for his title, the Faithful, the True; he judges and goes to battle in the cause of right.

12 His eyes were like flaming fire, and on his brow were many royal diadems; the name written there is one that only he knows.

13 He went clad in a garment deep dyed with blood, and the name by which he is called is the Word of God;

14 the armies of heaven followed him, mounted on white horses, and clad in linen, white and clean.

15 From his mouth came a two-edged sword, ready to smite the nations; he will herd them like sheep with a crook of iron. He treads out for them the wine-press, whose wine is the avenging anger of almighty God.

16 And this title is written on his cloak, over his thigh, The King of kings, and the Lord of lords.

It doesn't specify red, though being dyed with blood makes it not much of a stretch (though being washed in his blood does make garments white, so you never know ;) )

NOTE: And Mordor beat me to it while I was still typing. FIne work, sir :)

Well, all this is hardly comforting to me.

I used to wear white jackets and windbreakers until a friend asked me why.  I replied that white symbolized the moral purity of my life.  "No," he snapped.  "It symbolizes the colorlessness of your existence."

I switched to maroon and have been deep in red ever since.  Now I supposed I have to pick a new color...

Talk about overcomplicating the issue; most guys that accomplish that just don't join any church at all.

As for LDS wearing red, well:

Lol, I'm sorry guys. I'm embarrassed for having asked something so silly! I'm pretty sure I've heard that before somewhere and I just always assumed it was for modesty purposes and probably only practiced amongst the more conservative Mormons...

Don't worry about it.  We probably all have some interesting even silly misconceptions about other religions and cultures.  :)

Don't worry about it...  After all we are a group that you came here and asked us to talk about our underwear.   And we didn't so much as bat and eye about such a topic being asked us and answered seriously....  Clearly we have our quirks  :D

Well, some of us answered seriously.  I didn't answer because I was too busy giggling like a primary school boy with a fart machine. They said underwear!  HA! :D

Nope.

Closest I can think of is what to wear for certain ordinances (mainly baptism and covenants that occur in the temple) in which case it is white only.

the other thing I can possibly think of that might cause a problem is if someone makes it known publicly or at least at church that various colors they wear represent something that is against the church.

There's pressure for the guys to wear a white shirt and tie and black pants, but that's probably more because of traditional form of respect and organization than anything else... mainly the requirement is to dress to be respectful of the Lord.
