Our second worst Prime Minister in the last half century was a bit of a boxer in his student days, winning some sort of boxing championship at Oxford University when he was there as a Rhodes scholar.

what do you expect from a country founded by prison inmates?

So, where are people going to watch the debate tonight?

I may skip it.  It’s probably going to make me embarrassed and cringe.

If I do watch it, I’ll switch between Fox News and MSNBC just to see how bad the pundits try to spin it.

Yup. This is the best we got folks. Biden and Trump.

Two titans battling it out in open warfare, striving to assert dominance as the ultimate alpha male. It's a humbling demonstration of true might.

Mod: Mr. President, you've faced a lot of attacks because of your son's issues with drugs.  What can you say to alleviate voter concerns that his problems are not your problems?

Biden: I'm a father who loves his son.  So, if you're a parent who loves your son, then you should vote for me.

Mod: Of course, Mr. President.  I'm sure most of America agrees with you.

Now, Mr. Trump.  How can you stand there and say that you're all about supporting the rule of law while you have been convicted of 35 felonies and stand to be convicted of several more?

Trump: Everyone in America knows that was nothing more than a political hit job, just like this debate is a sham. <mic cut>. mumble mumble.

Mod: Mr Trump, you were given your date in court and you were found guilty in a court of law. There is no doubt that you are now a convicted felon.  How can the American people support a convicted felon as President?

Trump: mumble mumble.

Mod: Oh, let's turn that back on.  You were saying?

Trump: Just like this debate is a sham.

The scientific definition of intelligence is the ability to learn and alter one’s behavior.  I do not think there is an intelligent dog in this fight even though there are stark differences in intent.  I do go back to Trump best accomplishment in the Abraham Accords which in contrast is Biden’s greatest blunder in not following up.  I am concerned with those that think Biden’s great accomplishments are border security, stable economy and brilliant foreign diplomacy.   Current border policy looks more to be a throwback to human trafficking and the slave trade.

Actually, I thought it was at least twice as decent and relevant as I had hoped.  Both of 'em did more than their fair share of blaming the other for destroying everything good that has ever happened.  Both of 'em countered with endless crowing about all the wonderful things during their administration.  But the rest of it was ok.

Biden went 90 minutes without wandering off the stage or freezing up.  He lost his train of thought, stuttered and said words that didn't make sense a few times, but 90% of it was understandable.

Trump behaved himself.  Very little of his blathery showmanshippery, nothing over the top.

I was ok with the moderators, and the questions.   Trump did indeed take just say whatever the crap he wanted, but usually talked to the question.

It was nice to hear Trump saying something that I've been saying - if he had won his 2nd term, neither the war in Ukraine or the Hamas attack would have happened.  It was good to hear him characterize the war in Ukraine as a horrible, sad loss of life.  Trump claimed if he wins the election, he'll have the killing ended and things settled before he is inaugurated.  I believe it's feasible.   Glad to hear him mention the American hostages held by hamas, including Evan the reporter held in Russia.

Trump's take on what Roe vs. Wade actually was, and what overturning it actually meant, was spot on.  I wish more people understood it.

Glad to hear the border get so much discussion.  If anything wins Trump the election, it'll be millions of people crossing illegally and draining our public resources.  Biden did jack squat to defend his abysmal, nation-weakening failure.  Trump reminded everyone how his policies during COVID basically worked and made illegal immigration a non-issue.

"We find idea where fadffkvk damavdvdv," Biden said, demonstrating his brand new language.

The new language appears to be a mix of English words, repurposed with new definitions, along with other words that are nearly impossible to pronounce.

"Dvafd remfamf mfahahm," Biden continued. "Malarkey! The idea fvfvfv!"

I was fairly impressed with all of the participants.

  • Biden actually had a lot of information at his fingertips (accuracy and interpretation aside).
  • The moderators were careful not to be participants, but behaved as simple moderators. (kudos to them).
  • Trump was actually a lot more well behaved than in past debates (probably because of the format (mic status, time limits).  But the fact that he was fully able and willing to abide by the format.

I must concede that apparently I was only impressed by Biden because I had such low expectation.  He exceeded them.  But from an absolute scale, he still fumbled words and struggled.  My wife noticed that he didn't blink (a side-effect of the drug they put him on).  And just as soon as she mentioned it, he blinked. :)

Trump may have been reined in because of the format.  But he may have just learned that his points can speak for themselves as long as he doesn't do the unhinged act that he loves to do.  The Trump I saw last night may actually make me vote for him, even if will be stolen anyway.

In the aftermath, we saw Biden standing at the podium, frozen.  He didn't know where to go when the hosts and crew began circulating.  Finally, his wife had to come get him and help him walk down the stairs.

I'm shifting back to the dementia diagnosis instead of him simply being tired.  He was just staring out into space while standing behind the podium for at least a full minute.  Then he still seemed out of it as he was being helped down the stairs.

Liberal media outlets panicked about how bad it was for Biden.  They were having a fit wondering if they should put their weight behind someone else.  From the debate itself, I thought he actually had a strong showing (again, it may have been my low expectation which he exceeded).

We'll see what kind of damage control the liberal media performs in the next few months.

It hasn't even been 12 hours and I'm already seeing DFL folks juice up the down-ballot races. That may be the best strategy right now to keep Dem voters from just staying home. Unfortunately, local organizers will be up against a national media that's going to keep talking about the geriatric slugfest at the top of the ballot. We just have to remind voters that the issues they told us they care about -health care reform, affordable housing, and education- are issues that can be (and are) addressed in state legislatures and local governments. THAT'S the key to getting Dems out to vote this year.

When Jake Tapper said that people were spending $100 on groceries just a few years ago and are now spending $120, it left me wondering where in the country that's actually the case. This doesn't even account for all the shrinkflation that's gone on.

As far as the candidates themselves, I wasn't surprised by any of it. Biden is a disaster (policies, lies, health status) and he did himself no favors especially when he pointed out how long he's been in office in one way or another.

What I can't believe is the poll I saw referenced this morning that 33% think Biden won the debate. /face palm/

I'm afraid I don't know what DFL stands for.

Yeah, media denial or something - just in the past 2 years or so prices have doubled.

Indeed.   Overheard at the NT house: "Sorry, can't afford to repair the roof for another 3 years, gotta buy food!"

I feel ya.  Colorado republicans are in the middle of openly revolting against their own state leadership, and I haven't been this excited since we moved here 20 years ago.

https://www.cpr.org/2024/06/26/dave-williams-petition-removal/

I've been ticked off at the whole state turning from red to purple to blue while the state republican leadership basically sat in their smoking lounges and hid from scandals like the elitist landed gentry they are.  When Williams boldly called everyone to action to burn pride flags, and then doubled down on it, I went from being ticked off to looking at home prices in Florida and Texas.  So I'm glad there seems to be some serious repercussions happening.
