Okay well thank you for your input. I've never had anyone correct me on this since I joined The Church years ago, so I appreciate it 👍

I don't see anywhere that you used the name incorrectly. 😀

There are others here that seem to do it constantly...

  2. This has been bothering me in multiple threads where I keep seeing it repeated:

The name of the church is:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

    not:

the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

    or:

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The "The" should be present and capitalized. It's a formal part of the name.

  3. July 3, 1936:

“Communism is not a political party nor a political plan under the Constitution; it is a system of government that is the opposite of our Constitutional government.

“Since Communism, established, would destroy our American Constitutional government, to support Communism is treasonable to our free institutions, and no patriotic American citizen may become either a Communist or supporter of Communism.

“We call upon all Church members completely to eschew [shun] Communism. The safety of our divinely inspired Constitutional government and the welfare of our Church imperatively demand that Communism shall have no place in America” (signed: Heber J. Grant, J. Reuben Clark, Jr., David O. McKay, The First Presidency, in Deseret News, 3 July 1936; italics added).

This was quoted in President Benson's famous talk A Witness and a Warning  which decries communism.

The communalism of the saints in any era is different than Communism

I didn't realize that the loss of trades was part of this overall agenda.  But it really does seem to be so.

I think you give those conspirators too much credit. I have found they rarely look to the long term consequences of their choices.

As to the original post, Mike Rowe made some EXCELLENT points in this article.

  5. I'm confused as to why this is even a discussion. 🤔

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

    -------------

D&C 82:3 For of him unto whom much is given much is required; and he who sins against the greater light shall receive the greater condemnation.

4 Ye call upon my name for revelations, and I give them unto you; and inasmuch as ye keep not my sayings, which I give unto you, ye become transgressors; and justice and judgment are the penalty which is affixed unto my law.

It seems clear to me that sin is a very personalized thing, depending much upon individualized circumstances, and is the reason that a perfect and loving Savior is our judge rather than our fellow man.

Biblical scholars believe that the institution of the Jewish synagogue and regimented theological instruction (from which Christian communal worship practices evolved) arose during the Babylonian captivity, and not before.

1 Nephi 4:26 And he, supposing that I spake of the brethren of the church, and that I was truly that Laban whom I had slain, wherefore he did follow me.

    Those scholars are wrong.

  7. The fact is, the prophet said in April of this year:

"I am optimistic about the future. It will be filled with opportunities for each of us to progress, contribute, and take the gospel to every corner of the earth. But I am also not naive about the days ahead. We live in a world that is complex and increasingly contentious. The constant availability of social media and a 24-hour news cycle bombard us with relentless messages. If we are to have any hope of sifting through the myriad of voices and the philosophies of men that attack truth, we must learn to receive revelation.

Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. We will see miraculous indications that God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, preside over this Church in majesty and glory. But in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost."

    April 2018 General Conference

To me, it sounds like the changes being made are for the very purpose of strengthening the saints to be able to survive spiritually in the coming days.

Interesting that you responded to this.  I had no idea you were in law enforcement or training thereof.  When I wrote about people with divine protction, I was also considering Ammon among them.  And your avatar...

Private contractor for Homeland Security and was (at one point) working on a criminal justice degree. I was requested multiple times to take a job with the state of Utah to work with adult probation and parole as a result of going with them on their in-home visits so often. (At their requests.) In the end, I felt that Heavenly Father wanted me in a different profession and so I moved on from government work.

In terms of divine protection, for the five years I worked with the government, I never once had a physical altercation. I was the only one with my company who didn't. Drug arrests, removal of perps from properties, armed offenders, and some very dangerous situations, but it was always resolved with talking. (And sometimes yelling...) I never even had to draw my firearm. Although I was a combatives instructor, the Lord always blessed me to de-escalate the situation with words.

I have my concealed carry permit and do carry on occasion, but when I bought the gun I prayed and felt that I would never need to use it.

Now, if there is some way of telling what kind of criminal we're talking about, then it might serve us well to deal with the less violent armed robbers... ehrr emm...  You know what I mean.

In recent years, law enforcement has really had to rethink its strategies on how to deal with various situations.

You now have mass shooters, jihadists with potential exploding vests, protesters with chains and clubs, all combined with your always standard armed and unarmed robbers and burglars. (This list is clearly not meant to be comprehensive.)

Each of these situations requires a completely different approach in trying to deal with the threat. What works in one situation is completely the wrong approach in a different situation.

As someone who has been trained and has done the training for these types of situations, I can somewhat understand the hesitation some people have with armed citizens trying to deal with these situations. Even highly trained professionals make the wrong call sometimes in how to respond.

That being said, protection of life really is everyone's own responsibility. As the saying goes, "when seconds count, the authorities are minutes away." They are called first "responders" for a reason. They will show up to clean up the mess where violence has already occurred.

I would encourage everyone to pray and learn for themselves what God expects them to do in their lives. And then remember that not every individual is going to get the same answer.

There is enough room in the church pews for lambs and sheepdogs to sit next to each other. We are all part of the Master's flock.

  10. For every "keep the Sabbath Day holy" there is an equal justification to get your ox out of the mire.

Just as the Anti-Nephi-Lehies were justified in refusing to take up the sword, the Nephites were equally justified in defending their families even if meant taking the life of another.

The truth is that each of us should take the Holy Spirit as our guide and decide what the Lord wants us to do individually. This could even change on a day to day, case by case basis.

I admire the courage exhibited by those who take up arms in defense of others! I also admire the courage of those who choose to exercise restraint in such circumstances, if they feel that this is what the Lord would have then to do.

If he was told to back off and stick to stake affairs as the OP said, then how do you figure dictating ward activities exactly as he was told not to isn't being disobedient?

You should reread the OP's first post.

This was a stake leadership training being given at a stake level. That falls clearly within the stake president's stewardship to give whatever training he feels would be best for the members/leaders of the stake.

If he feels that multiple wards are going "beyond the mark" with the planning of their activities, then it falls within his stewardship to warn and encourage those who are leaders/advisors in the wards.

Does he have the the ability to receive revelation for the stake to which he is called to preside?

It sounds like the time when he was previously "warned" was due to actually attempting to plan the program for a particular ward's primary.

  12. 43 minutes ago, NightSG said:

The OP also stated earlier that it had previously been necessary for other leaders to go over his head, and it had come back down the chain for him to back off and stop micromanaging.  How do you figure it's not disobedient to wait a bit and start seeing how much he can get away with before that happens again?

That is a bold accusation. You are saying that he purposely is trying to get away with something he knows is contrary to the area leadership's desires?

    - A SP change policies for ward or stake auxiliaries (other than the Relief Society), with our without the aux leadership standing there. (Except for this thread)

The OP clearly stated that this was a training done on the stake level, not just a ward level, in her first post.

It is not out of the ordinary for a member of the stake presidency to attend and even contribute to the specific training being given to the ward auxiliaries during the stake leadership training breakout session. This could especially be true if their is an item of major concern or importance that they hope to reinforce across the stake.

Likewise, the message being presented was clearly in harmony with what is taught in the handbook.

I believe your accusation of a stake president being "disobedient" on these grounds is a bit extreme and  also incorrect.

  14. Interesting.

To me this is simple. It will more greatly bless the lives and families of the faithful.

Those who might be less faithful will either fade away or they will recognize that the Spirit is with them less than before and choose to repent.

There is also the hope that due to something being thought of as fresh, new, and exciting might just inspire a few folks to repentant obedience.

Regardless, I am very excited about the potential spiritual growth  from this new program for my family.

  15. As someone who grew up outside of Utah and lived there for only a few years, the "must see" list is really church focused, mountain focused, and then etc. in that order.

Church - Temple Square is truly THE prime place you need to visit. Lots buildings and things to look at and learn. Be sure to go over and check out the conference center while there.

Mountains - The mountains are all around you obviously. If you have done the "must see" church options I listed, then drive up a mountain and pull over so you can look out over the valley. Doing this during the day is almost a different experience than nighttime.

Once those things have been accomplished, THEN feel free to check out some of the other suggested options. But these comprise the "must see" Utah experience in Salt Lake for me.

Smiling... So, is that the thing people do with the teeth and stuff?  I always thought that was an aggressive expression where people wanted to eat you or something.  It simply wasn't recognizable.  I just couldn't place it.

Anyway, I've been making an effort to smile more.  I don't know if it is working.  I'll see in a couple more years.

The church handbook states that those interviewing members for recommends should not add any requirements to those that are already specified. In my opinion this example is one of unrighteous dominion.

This occurred back in the 1980's, so take it for what you will.

And just as stated, the man could have fought the issue even then. Instead, he chose to sustain his stake president in his calling. I guess I would ask the question, which choice results in the greater blessings?

Does his counsel go against the prophet?

    Handbook 2

    13.2.1
    Responsibility for Planning Activities

Before planning an activity, leaders consider the spiritual and temporal needs of members. Leaders seek the guidance of the Spirit to determine what kind of activity would help meet those needs. Careful planning is necessary to ensure that activities accomplish gospel-centered purposes and meet the needs of those who participate.

  19. Years ago there was a very faithful and loving man in our ward who had a really large beard. When it came time to renew his temple recommend, the new stake president stated that he would not sign the recommend unless he was clean shaven.

This man showed up at church with a clean shaven face and told us the story. One of the members mentioned that he didn't have to do that and that the stake president had no right to demand such a thing as there was no church policy against facial hair. Several nodded and agreed with that assessment.

This man rebuked them and said, "Hey, I raised my hand to sustain this man as the stake president and thought that you all did the same."

The truth of your situation is that your stake president was called of God to preside over your stake at this time. You will either sustain him in this calling or you will not.

Sorry, I shouldn't have spoken up here, but disrespecting those who served in Vietnam gets me a little irked.

For what it's worth, I'm glad that you spoke up in here.

Most especially, thank you for the sacrifices you made.

Also, my intention was never to disparage those who served, draftees or otherwise. I didn't stand in their boots and am not their judge.
