Still_Small_Voice got a reaction from Vort in Gun people: Tell me about the M18
The United States Army is also currently in the process of switching out M-4 and M-16 long guns to a new 6.8 millimeter rifle round.  It is not going to be the 6.8 x 43 Special Purpose Cartridge round.  It will have higher muzzle velocity and some sources state it will be effective to over 550 meters.
I hope they make the change.  I never liked the 5.56 x 45 cartridge.  When the civilian market started making the .300 AAC Blackout round popular for the AR-15 I was very happy.

I thought about looking up a few scriptural references where we're warned about wolves in sheep's clothing, but here are so many... so very many.
We've been warned about this.  It's a straight-up glorification of the desires of the natural man over the spiritual teachings of the Savoir, by a person claiming to preach His Gospel.  They're usually more subtle than this, but even as blatant as Bolz-Weber is being there are still those who are convinced she's doing right.

Amy, has it occurred to you that maybe this General Authority was right? That maybe sparing your precious, tender feelings in the moment was not actually the best course for you? That sometimes, blunt truth supersedes supposed tact?
No one likes bitter medicine, but for you to claim that this leader's words (which after all weren't derogatory or insulting, just more or less "buck up, little camper") were "REALLY hurtful" is almost comical, if not pathetic. You are and were an adult! I have had sons on missions who have needed to counsel with leaders because they were feeling bad, so I'm not without sympathy for your plight. But for you to characterize his advice as "REALLY hurtful" says far, far more about you than it does about him.
It seems to be common among women, and becoming ever more common among men (especially of the rising generation), that any voicing of discouragement or sadness, even those couched as personal criticism to the listener, must be met with sympathy. I very much disagree. Sometimes a stern "buck up" is the message people need to receive. Even female people.

Late hit on this, but I was mulling this over today and it occurred to me that the while believing the best in people’s motives until we are compelled to do otherwise is often a solid approach to life; the maxim as-given is overbroad and tends to benefit the legitimately evil (who do exist) at the expense of the credulous.
Bolz-Weber wants people—yes, including children—to fornicate.  She wants to tear down the moral, institutional, and familial barriers that deter fornication, including among youth.  That is fundamentally evil.  The high-minded psychobabble justifying her preferred praxis is less relevant than many of us would like to believe.

Still_Small_Voice got a reaction from SilentOne in Pastor Has Purity Rings Melted Down Into a Perverted Sculpture
Controversial pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber — described several years ago by the Washington Post as the "tatted-up, foul-mouthed" leader of "a new, muscular form of liberal Christianity" — has now targeted what's known as the evangelical Christian "purity" culture.
The founding pastor of Denver's progressive House for All Sinners and Saints — part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America — apparently has such contempt for sexual purity that she had a whole bunch of purity rings melted down and turned into a vagina sculpture. She then presented the finished product to iconic left-wing feminist Gloria Steinem with a great big hug at a recent conference.
Bolz-Weber hatched her plan last year as a way to fight back against the "purity" movement in which young girls — mostly in the 1990s and 2000s — were given rings as symbols of their promise to abstain from sexual activity until marriage.

Celebrating debauchery is what this is in my opinion.  There is nothing wrong with saving yourself for your husband or wife until marriage.  It is chastity and pleasing in God's eyes.

My friend, true repentance means turning away from sin. It is inappropriate to live with someone of the opposite sex that you aren't married to, and the fact that you moved in with her, despite the fact that you had good intentions, is not the proper course of action. Perhaps no continuing sexual relationship exists between the two of you, but the Bishop cannot know that for certain. It is a great thing that you came to him, and have a desire to go to the temple...but the covenants we make inside are not something to be taken lightly. The Bishop holds Priesthood keys, and if you were to go to the temple unworthily he would be at fault as well. He does care about you, but also has an entire ward to look after. The load he carries is heavy. He is looking out for you, and it sounds like you aren't ready to go just yet. Fornication is a big deal, but once a child is born out of wedlock to unmarried parents there are even more obligations you would have to meet as a father before being found worthy. You have made several mistakes and bad choices, and that is not the Bishop's fault. Being able to take the sacrament again doesn't mean you are done repenting and forgiven...true repentance is not just a change in behavior for a set period of time, but a true change of character. It lasts a lifetime. Best of luck to you moving forward, and don't give up. The effort it takes is worth it.

It's not bad to want to go to the Temple.
Usually, by the time you're around 8 years old, you realize you can't always have what you want just because you want it.  You have to work hard to QUALIFY for it or even deserve it.
    Go repent some more.

Just like government taxation is the only way to stop the climate from changing. Through the sheer force of financial punishment against the wealthy we can make sure our CHILDREN are safe from climate catastrophy! Did you even think of the children?

First, the fact that I’m not the one being stolen from does not make the theft OK.
Second, the notion that liquidating/redistributing repositories of capital does not affect the economy of which I form a part, betrays a laughable ignorance of how the economy works.

Excellent point. I would extend it a bit by pointing out that even if a given interpretation is plausible—even if it is in fact correct—the duty to define doctrine belongs to the leaders in God's kingdom. There is a point beyond which it is simply unwise to go, even if you're sure you're right. Our leaders have never taught that Nephi's/Lehi's tree of life symbolizes the Mother in heaven. God's Consort is nowhere mentioned in any scripture that I am aware of, certainly not explicitly. I think we are foolish to believe we know better than God does, or than his anointed leaders do, on such matters.

A quote used in the article suggests that most members believe that in Nephi's vision of the Tree of Life, when he says the tree represents the love of God, he means (nothing more than) "God's feelings of love for us" - do you suppose that's true?  I've always understood that everything about the tree and its fruit is about Christ, the Atonement, the Plan of Redemption/Salvation/Happiness, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Surely I'm not the only one?
Therefore, it makes me uncomfortable when someone wants to take that away and claim the tree means something else.  Sure, as soon as one says it - [tree = mother, fruit = child] - the symbolism becomes obvious, but that isn't the same is it being intended or correct.  Christ is the light and life of man.  He is the living representation of the love of God.  He is the only way.  Whether you like that or not, taking bits and pieces away and saying, "No, this doesn't represent Christ, it's something else" just seems like a bad (and dangerous) idea to me.
The word "gnostic" keeps popping into my mind as I think about this stuff.  (Apparently that word has yet to pop into Firefox's dictionary.)

Just because some idea pops into your head and you perceive a doctrinal connection that seems to make sense, that doesn't mean it's a good idea to write and publish an article about it. Getting past that sort of off-the-cuff writing before embarrassing yourself on a public stage is why small discussion lists were invented.
ThirdHour seems to need a little help with their editorial duties, especially in selecting which pieces ought to see the light of day. Helpful rule of thumb: If the topic of a column is "Heavenly Mother", then don't publish it.
