Cassiopeia Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 if you could learn any language, what would it be and why? I have this thirst to learn one but I'm currently rebelling against Spanish. I'm tired of have to's and practical. So what language do you love? Quote
Wingnut Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Portugese. I got some exposure to it while on my Spanish-speaking stateside mission. Portugese is easily the most beautiful language I've ever heard. Quote
prisonchaplain Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 if you could learn any language, what would it be and why? I have this thirst to learn one but I'm currently rebelling against Spanish. I'm tired of have to's and practical. So what language do you love? This one's easy. Korean. Might have a little something to do with my wife's mother tongue, and the language of her parents and siblings. Quote
pam Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Mine would be Spanish. I have a great love of the latino communities. Having grown up so close to Tijuana, I learned a lot growing up. I know a lot of words, just not how to formulate them into sentences. Quote
Dravin Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Deutsch (aka German). I've a thing for the WW2 though (I likes the movies and the history) so that may be why. I know my Mom would want me to know Swedish for genealogy purposes. Quote
beefche Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Well, I love the Slavic language. My ears perk up whenever I hear Slavic being spoken (you'd be surprised how often I do hear it). Russian is difficult, but not impossible. Bulgarian is easier (not as many grammar rules as Russian). But really, I would love to learn Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and Italian. Then I can order food in native tongue and sound impressive. I'd probably order the same dish in each language..... Quote
Cassiopeia Posted March 7, 2010 Author Report Posted March 7, 2010 I love Italian, well because I'm half Italian but I also lived in South Africa and learned a bit of Afrikaans but where would I use either of them? Or is it just okay to learn one for the heck of it? Quote
beefche Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Or is it just okay to learn one for the heck of it?ABSOLUTELY! I have taken Greek, Spanish, French, Russian, Bulgarian, and American Sign Language. Bulgarian is the only one I actually use. But I love learning new languages. Quote
Dr T Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Spanish I'd say. I has done me good over the years and it's also very close to a lot of lanugages like Latin which has many root words in it. Quote
Cassiopeia Posted March 7, 2010 Author Report Posted March 7, 2010 ABSOLUTELY! I have taken Greek, Spanish, French, Russian, Bulgarian, and American Sign Language. Bulgarian is the only one I actually use. But I love learning new languages.Holy cow! How do you keep them all straight? Quote
beefche Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Holy cow! How do you keep them all straight?I'm not that holy, but thank you. I don't. When I was in Bogota a few years ago, I kept getting my rusty Spanish mixed up with Bulgarian. The native Colombians were so confused.... Quote
SMG Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 French. My mother's side of the family can speak it, but I have great difficulty trying to form the words. Quote
MarginOfError Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Ukrainian (oh wait, I already know it). Believe it or not, Ukrainian was ranked the second most beautiful language behind Italian about a decade ago. Quote
JessicaHarper Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I enjoyed learning Latin in high school, you can learn so much about language itself with Latin. I have always wanted to learn Italian for some reason. Quote
Moksha Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Outside of English, Spanish would give you the broadest application for communication - unless of course, you are near mainland China. If you spoke Reformed Egyptian, you would be a valuable asset to the Maxwell Institute. Speaking Latin or Esperanto would make you a hit at Mensa meetings. Quote
Guest xforeverxmetalx Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 German's my favorite. In the process of learning it but unfortunately my verbal skills are nowhere near my written. Took Spanish in high school, just didn't work out so well. As far as what I don't know though, I really want to learn Norwegian. And probably will once I finish German. Quote
Bini Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I enjoyed learning Latin in high school, you can learn so much about language itself with Latin. I have always wanted to learn Italian for some reason.Latin was mandatory for us in school, on top of taking French as well. All those years of learning a foreign language and I don't use it at all here in the US. And I take back the learning Dutch post. I'd rather pickup Spanish so I can understand my husband when he gets animated with his workers. Quote
Cassiopeia Posted March 7, 2010 Author Report Posted March 7, 2010 I admit, I'm lazy about Spanish. I've taken it before. I know a bit from being around a good number of Mexicans, but I don't need it for my line of work. I was told in a class about 5 years back that if we study a foreign language and or math, we actually create new pathways in the brain and it helps stave off Alzheimer's. Not that I'm THAT old yet, but, me achin' bones are calling out a warning. :) Quote
ADoyle90815 Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I took Spanish in high school, but I've forgotten a lot of it. Since I'm in southern California, it would probably be a good idea to learn more as so many people here speak it. If I could learn another language for the fun of it and to keep my brain healthy, it would probably be Latin. Quote
Connie Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 if you could learn any language, what would it be and why? I have this thirst to learn one but I'm currently rebelling against Spanish. I'm tired of have to's and practical. So what language do you love?Welsh, because much of my ancestry came from Wales and it is a difficult language that would really work my brain. Quote
WillowTheWhisp Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I want to brush up on my French becaue my OH wants to move there in 5 or 6 years. I also want to improve my German because my daughter's boyfreind is going to Germany on his mission soon. Quote
