  1. If one finds ones membership is more valuable as a tool for political protest then having it... well then I think it is time to resign it.

  2. From the article: She considers her resignation a statement of solidarity with women who, unlike her, want to remain in the faith while voicing support for women’s ordination. No, really. She's leaving as a sign of support to the ones who are staying. You can't make this stuff up!

  3. I read that. It said that about 100 people showed up, most to show support for those resigning. And the one example they gave was of someone who hadn't been to church in 10 years. This doesn't really seem like a flood of resignations. More like some people with an axe to grind with the church, who hadn't been in a long time, using this as an excuse to make official that which was already the case.

  4. I'm not surprised over this at all. Many stated before KK was ex'd that they would resign if she was. Very sad, but it unfortunately is their decision. Hopefully some day they will realize that wasn't the best of decisions and will come back.

    Returning to church

Hi, I grew up as an atheist but joined the church at around 20 years old, I was active in the church for around 2 years then I stopped attending partly because I moved but also many other silly little reasons. I have been inactive for around 15 years and for a large part of that time didn't consider myself a member. My question is that i'm looking to go back to church but I don't know what the process will be as I have sin quite a bit in that time, I basically broke every part of the words of wisdom possible, I of course didn't pay any tithing at all, I never attended church at all and I have broken my vow of chastity(alone and in thought/desire only). One aspect I've been thinking about as well as repenting which I have already started is tithing, as I have been a member for the last 15 years should I work out how much I have earned in this time to pay tithing or will I be a full tithe payer by starting from now. Also I don't know anyone in the ward closest to where I live and my 1 visit there (15 years ago) I was a little freaked out by someone, for a silly reason but its still on my mind, and its not to easy for me to get there. I know I should just bite the bullet so to speak and go on Sunday and see what the Bishop says but its easier said than done. If it has any bearing on the answer I was/am an Aaronic priesthood member, I have not done any temple ordinances other than proxy baptisms, and I did not serve or start a mission. Also I am moving in the next few months so should I leave it till after I move or is now best. Thank in advance for any and all answers

  6. "Some members assume that one can be in full harmony with the spirit of the gospel, enjoy full fellowship in the Church, and at the same time be out of harmony with the leaders of the Church and the counsel and direction they give. Such a position is wholly inconsistent, because the guidance of this Church comes not alone from the written word but also from continuous revelation, and the Lord gives that revelation to the Church through his chosen prophet. It follows, therefore, that those who profess to accept the gospel and who at the same time criticize and refuse to follow the counsel of the prophet are assuming an indefensible position. Such a spirit leads to apostasy. It is not new. It was prevalent in the days of Jesus and in the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith." Pres. Marion G. Romney.

  8. Good Afternoon JacoJohnson! :) You can use your life experiences to teach others that God is real and that He loves His children. You can use your life experiences to help others to know the power of the atonement. To be a leader is to be a person who can teach others about the gospel of Jesus Christ because of experience. Your struggle in life is an opportunity for you to put great faith in to God and His power to heal and make you whole. -Finrock

  9. My uncle just returned from serving as a Mission President and two of his daughter-in-laws are inactive because of this. Both these women are well education, one with a PhD from Harvard. My wife is a PhD candidate and a respected health professional yet had the exact same reaction my friends uneducated surfer wife had, "way to show you don't understand your own religion".

  10. The funny thing is that they're drawing the line themselves. How often would He gather us, but we would not.

    And in Scouting News...

I am SPITTING mad right now. "A great lesson in civics"?!?!?! If that had been my son and his troop, I would probably be excommunicated, and the lesson in civics would be a felony murder trial. I hope someone is staying with that boy's parents, right now. First rule of firearms handling; never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.

  12. I would like to think they were really hoping for the higher number of 400-500 showing up. Only 100 showing and way less than that actually resigning .....makes me wonder if there movement is losing steam.

  14. fwiw, I actually thought the comment section was rather mild. Usually we get way, way worse than that. Yeah, I skipped straight to the comments and haven't read the article quite yet.

  15. Is any action being taken against this guard? Making the troop assume all guilt is not okay here. "A kid took a picture so I just had to hold a gun to a child's head".

    Testimonies

I'm not responding to what you're saying Pam, obviously, but to other's comments here. I'm just using your post as a springboard... The first presidency guides are not tools by which we are meant to judge others. We should use these guides to improve our own efforts. Sitting in judgment of others during testimony meeting is a sure way to not feel the Spirit. On the other hand, if we approach it with compassion, acceptance, truly listening for the messages' intent, we can, and will be taught by the Spirit, even when others' testimonies are poorly executed. I am, frankly, shocked at the judgment some have. Do we really love our neighbors so little? Wow! It's one thing to preach principle (something I do often, and am accused of judging for). It's another thing entirely to sit and criticize people for their weaknesses.

  20. I would like to understand why you feel the interpretation of the command, is that they were commanded not to die? It appears to me the command is against some other principle, while death is merely the consequence.

  21. Unless you are prepared to enter into litigation with your bishop if he gives you bad temporal advise I would only seek the help of a trained professional. Would you ask your plumber for legal or financial advise? Unlikely. TFP likes to quote scripture and that is great, what is often missed is context. The context of the revelations given to Joseph about the structure and foundation of the church are not always relevant to our modern times.

  23. If she is righteous I have no doubt angels have ministered to her and continue to do so. She is simply unaware of their presence. When our minds and hearts are right before God then we will see them (Moroni 7:30). The ministering of angels is an outpouring of the Spirit. Those who walk in the spirit hear their words, feel their presence, and know them. Of course this is just a step on the road of sanctification. Paul clarifies for the Hebrews the importance of looking to the Son of God and not simply angels. It appears the Hebrews were to focused on this subject for he says, "[Christ] being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou are my Son, this day have I begotten thee?" (Hebrews 1:4-5). He continues to show how the Son is superior to angels. The chapter ends with this interesting comment, "Therefore, angels are only servants - spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation." (Heb 1:14 NLT). Then our work is to ensure our inheritance and we will be cared for.

  26. Perhaps one way would be, if you know you have a person that constantly disrupts the lesson, is not open it up to voluntary comments. Maybe you could assign a few people in advance to share their thoughts or feelings on a particular part of the lesson. That would require really planning in advance but it would keep the subject of the lesson on track.
