Family in trouble for kids walking home
theSQUIDSTER and 2 others reacted to Litzy for a topic
My problem with the "it only takes once" mentality is that people pick and choose what they apply it to. We all do it and that is our prerogative. It only takes one lousy driver one time to kill or maim everyone in the car which is infinitely more likely to happen than an abduction, yet you never see parents keeping their kids out of cars. We tend to pick our favorite dangers and ignore others no matter the actual risk. On a tangent on the cars, I once saw a study that suggested an increase in kids getting killed by cars due to more parents driving their kids everywhere. If you're trying to save one child, don't kill five more in the process. That's called a step backwards. In this case at hand, the parents took time and diligence to teach the kids the route to and from the park. The kids were hardly out roaming wild in idiocy. When did it became so wicked to teach kids skills?3 points -
And I'm on the brink of moving my family to within a few miles of our nation's capitol. Maybe a dumb time to do that, but we feel peaceful about the decision. We are going to avoid living near a big mall and my husband's job isn't in the capitol building nor the white house. So if he can just figure out how to get out of town on the metro when everyone is in a panic, he'll be OK. Or we'll all perish together. I'm not afraid though. I remember feeling very worried when my son was in Jerusalem for a semester. But he just laughed it off and said the bomb sirens and mob scenes at the Wailing Wall added excitement. I know what he means. It's always more worrisome for those watching from the outside than for those closer to the action. When you're on a crazy winding road, you feel much more safe and in control if you're the one with your hands on the wheel, than one riding in the backseat.2 points

Talk about your 'nanny state'. I don't hate on it. But I think it is wrong for there to be no such thing as a kid who cannot walk to school. When I was a kid, all the way thru' college, and law school, I walked to school, or rode my bike. It is ridiculous to see the high school here today, no kid could ever walk two blocks. You end up with fat lazy kids who can't waddle out of their SUV to get a McDonald's grease burger. They have to use the drive thru'. I know people with 25 year old kids who never worked a day in their life, and don't have the ability to find an office building two blocks away. Are these kids ever going to get a job? How will they be able to find the place. dc2 points

The weird thing for me is, I was that girl that NEVER wanted kids, especially birthing them. I hated being around other people's kids and never dreamed that I would ever get pregnant and have my own kids. How things have changed for me. I have a 3-year old and now expecting baby #2. I dunno, it just doesn't bother me when others post about their kids, excessively or lacking - it just doesn't. If I recall correctly, the mother who received the letter is a new mother, I think her daughter was 6 months or something? Naturally she's an excited new mum wanting to share all the exciting milestones of "baby's first day at the park" or "baby laughing for the first time". I think it's a bit harsh to be hating on that, specifically, but could understand the annoyance for people without kids or people with lots of kids that just don't wanna hear about MORE kids. The Unfollow feature, though, it's handy2 points

Try reading the OP. Maybe that will answer your question. The rest of your whining is the tired old copblock garbage and not worth responding to. You've already exposed yourself as hostile to law enforcement, so further discussion is impossible as you have already shown to be unreasonable on the topic.2 points

Wear ORANGE to Church day?
lagarthaaz and one other reacted to NeuroTypical for a topic
If people's efforts to raise awareness about something, do not interfere with my ability to do my thing on Sunday, then more power to 'em. The deal with awareness campaigns, is (if they're genuine) they're about raising awareness. "Here's stuff you maybe didn't know, that maybe will cause you to think a little, maybe." I like learning new things, even at church in the hallway. But I don't necessarily agree with every new thing I hear.2 points -

I don't see it as putting them on a pedestal so much as recognizing their sacrifice for their Christian faith and the example they provide for the rest of us as truly holding to their faith in the face of extreme consequences. That's something a lot of us could learn from, myself included.2 points -
Some people are much more sensitive to conflict or doing something wrong than others. That would be my guess on the crying. I agree with the assessment that the rule is in place to prevent individuals from smuggling in recording devices "for what ever nefarious reason." It was a simple mistake, no harm done.1 point

I'm all for this legal action. No matter where you stand on the parenting issue, no cop has the right to outright lie like that to children in custody. A cop should not be promising to take kids home, driving them around for three hours, refusing to let them contact their parents, etc.1 point -
cell phones in the temple
Blackmarch reacted to Just_A_Guy for a topic
I have a dim recollection of seeing "no phones/cameras past this point" at some TR desks. I think the SL temple might even have a camera-check--or at least, I think it used to. Even if there are no such signs, it just seems like a logical step given how clearly we are told a) that temple proceedings are not to be recorded/disseminated, and b) that the temple is a place where we leave behind the things of the outside world; that recording devices and devices that serve primarily to connect us with the outside world would be frowned upon if not outright banned. I understand the idea of bringing it along and reading scriptures off it, but--for better or for worse--temples are not generally intended or understood to be places for in-depth scripture study. (Meditation? Yes. Prayer? Most certainly. Scripture study? Not really.)1 point -
Very observant...there are things in the Bible if repeated might get one banned. But what makes most Prophets so assume is they reveal their weaknesses In even every book, in all humanly. And Christ is indeed Superman...good post. Just as with us, like all men are flawed as all Prophets. God calls the flawed, as it is all he has to called. What makes them great is all they accomplish despite their weaknesses. God bless them! :)1 point

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Was the reaction better or worse in your opinion with Boston than with OKC? I don't really see how either reaction caused a threat to peace or security. Liberty maybe but was that a bad thing to tell people to stay in till the bombers were found?1 point

I think you made a good point. It's a different age. Instead of (or maybe in addition to) filling photo albums, a lot of people post photos to FaceBook. And a lot of times it is to do exactly what you said, keep family members up to date. You have everything all in one accessible place, for those who want it. More efficient than sending out emails. Doesn't clutter people's inboxes. Friends and family can make the choice to look or not look, read or not read. I know I have certainly been able to keep more up-to-date and see more pictures from friends and families than I would have otherwise. It's just so simple. Look at what you want to, scroll past the rest.1 point

I don't see how the two correlate and how you could be called a hypocrite. In one aspect the concept was to "stand out" and say the Church is wrong in their standings. In this case, the idea is support for victims nothing against the Church. Are we wrong to buzz our heads when a family member or close friend is diagnosed with cancer, and we show up on Sunday with such support? I don't think so. I notice some people wearing pink ties in support of cancer awareness. They quietly and reverently worship without drawing attention to themselves. Wear an orange tie and quietly and reverently worship. Now, just my personal opinion, I wouldn't wear an orange collared shirt for support, but a necktie -- sure.1 point

Baptism 7 And it came to pass after many days there were a goodly number gathered together at the place of Mormon, to hear the words of Alma. Yea, all were gathered together that believed on his word, to hear him. And he did teach them, and did preach unto them repentance, and redemption, and faith on the Lord. 8 And it came to pass that he said unto them: Behold, here are the waters of Mormon (for thus were they called) and now, as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another's burdens, that they may be light; 9 Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life— 10 Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you? 11 And now when the people had heard these words, they clapped their hands for joy, and exclaimed: This is the desire of our hearts. 12 And now it came to pass that Alma took Helam, he being one of the first, and went and stood forth in the water, and cried, saying: O Lord, pour out thy Spirit upon thy servant, that he may do this work with holiness of heart. 13 And when he had said these words, the Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and he said: Helam, I baptize thee, having authority from the Almighty God, as a testimony that ye have entered into a covenant to serve him until you are dead as to the mortal body; and may the Spirit of the Lord be poured out upon you; and may he grant unto you eternal life, through the redemption of Christ, whom he has prepared from the foundation of the world. Sacrament (Book of Mormon | Moroni 4:1 - 3) 1 THE manner of their elders and priests administering the flesh and blood of Christ unto the church; and they administered it according to the commandments of Christ; wherefore we know the manner to be true; and the elder or priest did minister it— 2 And they did kneel down with the church, and pray to the Father in the name of Christ, saying: 3 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it; that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him, and keep his commandments which he hath given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.1 point -
MG: Beslan, Mumbai, Nairobi. All were trial runs for the US. We know this. Floorplans of US schools were found in the caves of Afghanistan. Other intel that I can't talk about indicates that you are wrong in your assumption that the US is not a target. They are making plans and it is a question of when. As you have all been told before: grenade launchers are for gas munitions and less lethal munitions. No HE is being used by law enforcement. The primary use for armored vehicles is for officer/citizen rescue when in a position exposed to gunfire. We used ours last year when a suicidal male drove down a long dirt road. The officer dispatched to check on him drove up the road towards him. As eh stepped out of his car a gunshot rang out. He hightailed it out of there. Open field, no cover, except a patrol car. Yep, we used an armored car to drive up to the suicidal males vehicle so nobody got shot while we approached. Other departments have used them to rescue citizens and officers who have been injured by gunfire. But you guys already know this, we have gone the rounds on it before. There is no militarization of the police. We are not invading anyone's city. Even if we wanted to (we don't) all of us combined could not occupy a medium sized city and hold it. Puh-leeze. Quit over reacting. Most cops are not ex-military. As an example, my precinct has 42 officers. Five are ex-military, one with no middle east experience. My previous assigned precinct had 64 officers, seven were ex military, two with no middle east experience. You do the math.1 point

I guess my thought is--I "follow" friends because I like them and want to know what's going on in their lives. I think it's unfortunate when I have to unfollow someone who spams me with multiple mundane posts, and then miss out on the really important stuff that I DO want to know about because I've already unfollowed them. In this case, what the letter-writer did was bullying. But I'm going to respectfully suggest that unless one's kids are doing something that is objectively entertaining or funny (sufficiently so to appeal to people who don't even know the kid)--one to two Facebook kid-posts per week is pah-lenty.1 point -

LDS Church Study Help
lagarthaaz reacted to skalenfehl for a topic
I think a lot of what is found at lds.org, etc is periphery. It's not bad at all, just a whole lot of extensions of what the church is about. In my humble and earnest opinion, read the Book of Mormon. This is the keystone of our faith and who and what we are about. It was so important to the Lord that the Book of Mormon come forth, that He had Joseph Smith translate and publish the record before restoring the fullness of the gospel, for the very fullness is contained in the book. I am also impatient and I have found that listening to the Book of Mormon on mp3 at work allows me to get through it in three days. I can get through all the scriptures in about three to four weeks (Bible, Book of Mormon, D&C, PoGP) and then start over. This repetitive pattern of reading over and over again has opened up my mind to the deeper layers found in the scriptures. If you prayerfully study the Book of Mormon in this manner, I am confident that you will not only begin to understand what we believe, but you will also be filled with the Holy Spirit as you do so. Just the first two books (1st and 2nd Nephi) are enough to teach you because Nephi's own life can be viewed as an allegory to the path that each of us must take to come unto Christ. LDS members will be able to relate Nephi's life as "Adam" who is cast out from his home in Eden, goes into the wilderness and after having been true and faithful is brought back into God's presence. Nephi's inclusion of Isaiah is very specific and purposeful. The many other prophets/kings/judges are chronicled to give us more examples of the doctrines that we believe in while weaving some of the deeper mysteries of God. Jesus Christ's visit to this people also gives us important information concerning their relevance as part of the House of Israel. The wars, contentions and secret combinations (conspiracies) teach us, the readers, what to avoid in our lives as we struggle in our own world to live in a society where Satan is constantly battling for control. Read the Book of Mormon. You truly cannot read it enough times. Trust me. :)1 point -

Sorry to tell you this Jamie, but despite the best efforts of the Aztecs to kill off all flamingos, according to each of my recent counts, on April 9, March 21, March 6 and February 2 the number of real flamingos exceeded the number of plastic flamingos by between 3 (9 April) and 7 (21 March). However, given the frequency with which these figures change, its quite possible that by tomorrow, the number of plastic flamingos will once again prevail. Interestingly, the situation with plastic turtles is the complete opposite of the plastic flamingos, but that's a story for another post.1 point -
