  1. I think they do. I know that when my daughter was stillborn and I elected to be induced, it was counted as an abortion. Makes me sick to think of that. I could have waited for my body to go into labor naturally, BUT because I couldn't handle that idea, it's an abortion because I elected to end the pregnancy. My sister was induced at 18 weeks. her baby had been dead for 2 weeks. It was also counted as an abortion. They need to be better with the wordings. Chosing to end a pregnancy with a dead baby shouldn't count as an abortion.

  3. I don’t see a source linked. Are they counting as “abortions”, a post-miscarriage D&C? Because my wife has had two of those . . . Also, on declining rates: IIRC there are also studies suggesting that people these days, and especially kids, are just plain having less sex. All that said, though: this ranks up there with the CDC’s stat that 100 million Americans have an STD. It’s easy to forget just how ripe for the burning our homeland has become.

  4. Welcome! You allude to Matthew 24. In that sermon Christ is talking specifically about His Second Coming; which happens after days of tribulation. The point is “when I come again, everyone’s going to know it; you won’t need anyone to point it out for you”. The point there is *not* that there will be no future prophets (indeed, in Matthew 7 Christ explicitly gives us a guide for discerning true prophets from false ones; and the book of Revelation speaks of at least two future prophets yet to be born). Nor is it a claim that there can be no private manifestations of the risen Lord prior to the Second Coming (else Mary Magdalene, and various other scriptural apostles and witnesses—including John, whose book of Revelation is an account of a private manifestation of Jesus Christ to himself—would necessarily be liars).

  5. Maybe say something like "I really like you and appreciate the time we've spent together but I'm addressing some personal issues right now and need to take a break to get my stuff together. I hope it won't take too long but I hope you'll support me and still be interested in continuing to date in a few months after I'm more of the person I want to be."

    So How About Music?

My son is a classically trained pianist. He loves heavy metal because, in his words, it’s classical discovering electricity.

  7. I disagree with this line of thinking, once the repentance process is complete then why would you ever mention it again to anyone ever? It's not a lie of omission how can you omit something that will likely never come up. It would have to be something over the top, but most over the top sins that I can think of would have gotten you excommunicated. Since it is not any of those (to our knowledge) why would you mention it, ever, to anyone, under any circumstance?

  8. The purpose of this church is to prepare a people for the return of Jesus for his reign of 1,000 years to finish all that is necessary to complete the plan of salvation of man. Many think in terms of destroying the wicked but that is just a secondary consequence. The primary purpose is to establish a society of Saints of G-d that are necessary both for his return and the completion (restoration) of all things. The greatest need or accomplishment of the Saints are families. Families that are centered around and dedicated to the divine union of a man and a woman in marriage. Although there is much needed to be done in the temples - the foundation of preparations and the greater work will be done in the homes of the Saints. I believe that the referbations of the temple are a type and shadow of what needs to be done in the home. That our homes need to be physically clean and beautiful as well as spiritually pure and peaceful. I am concerned that children are not being taught to keep homes (personal space) physically clean and beautiful and spiritually pure and peaceful. The Traveler

They ought to be made to smash their own games consoles and mobile phones with a sledgehammer. Then they should be made to work night and day to buy mobile phones and games consoles - and then be forced to smash those as well. As for vodka, they should be force-fed an entire bottle - each. (Yes I know - I'm not being very Christian. But I used to be a model train enthusiast myself, back before I was married.)

  10. I don't so much think that science has lost, or at least not that the scientific method has lost, but that the way we fund and disseminate "science" has lost credibility. The problem is that science is bought and paid for by corporations with financial and political interests. Even if the scientific method is applied properly the stink of biased funding makes it hard to believe results. This goes for nutrition, climate change, economics and basically everything that can be scientifically studied. By discontinuing studies that start to show preliminary results that aren't in the funders best interest useful information stays out of the literature while plans can be made to set the conditions such that the desired outcome will be found. Continue to fund enough studies designed to bring about a certain outcome and others that may show contrary information can be dismissed as outliers which will statistically happen but shouldn't cause any great concern. I don't have the answers, but it seems like as a society we've lost more and more trust in government and corporations to get things right.

  11. So, it is true that there are genuine bad stories out there. It is also true that russian efforts to weaken our country have included dividing us over stuff like vaccines, making us look dumber than we are. But stuff like this is true too:

  12. I may be echoing what's already been said here (and said more eloquently) ... A. Beware of false prophets means there will be true prophets; otherwise the Lord would have said, "Beware of all who claim to be a prophet." B. As with many answers, the question helps give context: Matthew 24:3 ¶ And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? C. And, yes, contextually Jesus is clearly referring to His second coming to the world at large at the end of the world. Did the world end in the 1800s? Given A. above, he will obviously be speaking to and maybe even appearing to his prophets. Fortunately the Lord also taught us to not lean upon our own understanding and that if we lack wisdom we can but ask God. The context here is the second coming at the end of the world: 26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

  13. I think, as I’ve said elsewhere, that it suggests the Church believes it will remain in uninterrupted possession of these structures for at least another generation or so; which arguably is a little incongruous with the catastrophic doodie-hits-the-fan scenario some of us may tend to associate with the times immediately preceding the Second Coming. Otherwise, I don’t read much into it. My daughter and I were in the Salt Lake Temple earlier this month and I was struck with how . . . tired much of the interior is, especially in the annex and underground portions. Moreover, much of Salt Lake’s original beautiful wood finishes have been enameled over with a 1960s-era palette. St. George and Logan are nothing like their original interior layouts; and while I think Manti has been more sensitively preserved, I don’t think it gotten serious attention since the mid-1980s. It’s just plain time to do this, especially since the Church’s newest temples seem so much more (for lack of a better word) opulent than the ones we built in the late 20th century—more fine detailing/intricate patterns, more marble, more stained glass. I also note that Oakland’s has been reconfigured so that those in the chapel adjacent the baptistery can now, while awaiting their turns to be baptized, see into the baptistery via a glass wall—I don’t remember that being possible, when I did baptisms there as a kid. I wonder if more older temples generally are going to be retrofitted with this feature.

  15. I don't know if I can put this on the doctor. Listen... my brother is a doctor. He went through 12 years of schooling and loads of money to be able to say with confidence his recommendations. Now, luckily, my brother is also a very faithful person. So if you tell him, "The spirit told me I shouldn't vaccinate." he will take it into consideration. But then, my brother prays about things too. So, you got a doctor who is not particularly religious. You tell him - he shouldn't vaccinate a kid against what he has known for a fact is safe for 95%? of the kids because... the spirit prompted you. "The spirit" versus 12 years of schooling and loads of money for him to be confident about his recommendations. I wouldn't even consider that he "loves his position more than his patients". What he knows is - vaccination is what is good for his patients. My pediatrician is a holistic pediatrician. She's pretty open to anti-vaxxers and would simply let you sign an opt out form if you refuse to get your kid vaccinated so she doesn't get sued. But she had no problem telling me with confidence - you need to vaccinate your kid.

  17. Sounds like a co-worker is someone without authority and wants you to do what they want. Tell your supervisor what this person is doing. I would also pray for inspiration on what to do. If you do decide to quit do not quit without first finding another job.

  18. Well, that escalated quickly . . . Can we agree that Jesus *did* appear privately to Paul and to John the Revelator after His ascension to Heaven, in such a way as not to constitute His Second Coming? If we do agree on that, then why did John bother to write his experience down; and why did Paul bother to tell others what he had seen? Why not just tell Jesus “hey, if you want everyone to know what You told me—do it Yourself”?

  20. Medically speaking (and I say this in my experience at my previous workplace doing women's health research), if the child dies before delivery, it is an abortion. End of story. They merely get coded as either "spontaneous abortion" or "induced abortion." In @LadyGunnar's case, the codes applied ideally would have reflected "spontaneous abortion followed by induction." One other likely contributor to the decline in abortion noted by Guttmacher--and forgive me, some of you may not like this--is Obamacare. Having mandated that insurance cover contraceptives gave a lot of women easier access to birth control that didn't previously have the option. I'll hide behind this blast wall now.....

    BYU Honor Code changes

That wasn’t my experience, MG. For me there wasn’t really an element of fear, because I knew I was being a good boy and I was less concerned about notions like “procedural due process” than I am now. And I didn’t see people going about looking for breaches. Although—and I never thought much about this at the time—but when Just_A_Girl and I were dating, we would often talk in her apartment until midnight (at which time I, being a male, had to leave the apartment); and then we’d move into the hallway outside the apartment and talk for another hour or two. I remember one night, sitting in the hallway chatting, and around 12:30 the door of the apartment across the hall opened just a crack and swiftly shut again. This happened again and again, probably, every five or ten minutes for the next hour. At length the door opened completely, and the female resident emerged and asked if we were “hall monitors”. We, of course, denied this (I had never heard of such a thing at BYU). Eventually we managed to convince this young lady that Just_A_Girl was simply a neighbor talking to her boyfriend; whereupon the door opened a bit wider and a young man sheepishly exited the apartment and beat a hasty retreat.
