  1. - Aromas can affect mood sometimes, with some people. - The placebo effect sometimes is a real thing. Regarding essential oils, anyone claiming anything beyond those two things, is to be viewed with suspicion and held as inherently untrustworthy until proven otherwise. We are all greater than the sum of our parts, but someone believing essential oils are anything more than they are, is a negative count on that part.

  2. I don't have many...my thoughts are that they are like any other MLM...a pyramid scheme in disguise to try to avoid legal cases against those who created the organization in the first place. My opinion is that...no, they do not work. They may smell nice to a degree, but they are not truly a health item. This seems to be a warning to me... Uncertain if this is the same essentials oils...but there is an essentials oils that has been issued a warning letter from the FDA several years ago in 2014 FDA enforcement and criminal investigations - warning letter - young living An article covering it more recently states article on essential oils I personally would not get involved with them in that scale or level. If you think aromatherapy would help you go instead to a licensed M.D. and ask for their opinion and help in obtaining the right medications and therapy in a professional setting.

  3. Everything you described about the nature of the Godhead, I agree with. I think the difference is we accept that God the Father and Jesus are corporeal beings, although exalted and perfect. And the notion that God is of the same species as Man. The nature of the unity of the Godhead/Trinity is really not of a concern to me, because I think we basically agree, they are separate persons, but also unified beyond just a committee in a way we cannot comprehend.

  4. This is what made (makes) my conversion so difficult for me. I don't have a witness from God on most things. I do have a confirmation from God that I am supposed to be part of this church, even if I don't entirely know why. It makes so many of the questions I have difficult.

  5. Here's my definition of the Trinity: The Father is God. The Son is God. The Holy Spirit is God. There is only one God. So... Modalists say God in One in Three--that Jesus is all three, and fills this different 'modes' or roles. Trinitarians say that God is Three in One--that the three are distinct persons, but are one in a substantial way. LDS Godhead says God is three separate personages that are united in purpose. Each view has its opponents, its questions, and its defenses. Modalism believes it solves the argument of the Jews and Muslims--that Christians are polytheists. I suppose that LDS believe their teaching solves the seeming absurdities of God being one and three simultaneously. Trinitarians believe we hold the biblical middle ground. Of necessity; we embrace the difficulty of understanding God's threeness/oneness.

  6. It is a difficult matter to define the nuances of this discussion. We Trinitarians struggle against the idea that the Godhead is only united in purpose--insisting that God is one in some substantial way. Then LDS wonder at our seeming Modalism and ask of us the same questions we ask of Oneness folks (who was Jesus talking to when He prayed, etc.). We answer that no, the three beings are distinct--just not separate. Now LDS wonder why we find their belief so different. The bottom line is that Trinitarians believe in the Oneness and the Threeness of God, and we suspect that diverting too far one way or the other leads to serious error.

  7. Some men wont open up and just stay quiet with generic responses while relying on their better judgement. From an organizational standpoint, where there is smoke there is fire so I wouldnt be too worried that this particular person behaves this way but that many people behave this way when it comes to finding the reason they dont attend and/or left. Most of you that follow my posts in here know that I appear borderline anti-mormon when I am simply expressing my true feelings and questions about the church. Im just trying to find answers and make sense of my testimony in the gospel. I will NEVER open up like this to my local leaders or fellow members for fear of being labeled.

  8. There is no problem at all. Each person of the Trinity is God. Each person is distinct from the other. They are one divine God, they are Creator, Saviour and Comforter. M.

  9. Scents can remind you of...things...pleasant or unpleasant. These memories can help you cope with insomnia. I took neuroanatomy, not by choice, the area to do with scent weaves itself around the brain. Does some scent have a pleasant memory for you? Pumpkin spice? Peppermint? Lavender? Easy to find out. Go to a bulk barn or winners and sniff the bottles. Put a bit of that scent on your pillow, ban work/news/worry from the bedroom and the scent can help soothe you.

  11. Yes, you're right. I was thinking the very same thing as I wrote. I asked myself, "How is it, Harrison, that you find it easy to accept the possibility of one God instead of many or that God always existed, but difficult to comprehend some other doctrines?" And I confess that people were telling me such from a very early age. So, I counseled myself that some other person such as @Maureen could just as easily perhaps accept the doctrines you (and @prisonchaplain ) have endeavored to explain to me. So, I appreciate your patience with me, and taking a little extra time to share your beliefs. I hope my respect has been apparent.

  12. And thus why I love these words from Nephi, "And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things." We don't have to have every question answered, nor do we need to know everything. We simply need to remain faithful to what the Lord has witnessed, while keeping our eye on the tree of life. Stay true to that and then we will be like Joseph F. Smith, "It is not by marvelous manifestations unto us that we shall be established in the truth, but it is by humility and faithful obedience to the commandments and laws of God. When I as a boy first started out in the ministry, I would frequently go out and ask the Lord to show me some marvelous thing, in order that I might receive a testimony. But the Lord withheld marvels from me, and showed me the truth, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little [see 2 Nephi 28:30], until he made me to know the truth from the crown of my head to the soles of my feet, and until doubt and fear had been absolutely purged from me. He did not have to send an angel from the heavens to do this, nor did he have to speak with the trump of an archangel. By the whisperings of the still small voice of the Spirit of the living God, he gave to me the testimony I possess. And by this principle and power he will give to all the children of men a knowledge of the truth that will stay with them, and it will make them to know the truth, as God knows it, and to do the will of the Father as Christ does it. And no amount of marvelous manifestations will ever accomplish this." (emphasis mine)

  18. I dabble. I own a small box of them. I think they smell good. I may have used some on general aromatherapy advice. Do they work? Sure, I'll accept the anecdotes here and there. I like the idea of them working. Funnily enough, the more out there and "woo" the claim (i.e., this will open this meridian to new experiences) the more at peace I am with the claim ("well, I wouldn't know where to begin the science on that, so okay") It's the more medical claims I get iffy over (are you sure this will effectively treat a UTI?) I don't buy from oil MLMs, largely because of the price, a bit because some MLM folks be crazy, and also because I know a few people who actually fill the bottles at Young Living and doTerra and the intense purity claim doesn't exist. I'll order good oils elsewhere for a fraction of the price, thanks. So, they have no power in making big medical claims for their companies, it seems most trained aromatherapists lack strong preferences for companies and would be the ones to consult medically anyway. It you want to sell for a hobby, that's fine, but it usually takes intense work and intense luck to make significant money in such companies. I also wouldn't buy from MLM companies if price is a concern, you can get fine oils for much cheaper at your local health food store.

  22. I ran into a person on another forum who flat-out said he would allow someone to take him to court for not hiring or firing a Mormon. He saw it as standing for what was right and he felt that society should not in good consciousness allow Mormons. A relative yesterday at dinner mentioned a manager up at some office at Utah State University told them they were not allowed to hire white LDS males. Said relative smartly said sure, as long as the instruction was give in writing. Sure, the law really does protect against this sort of thing, as it should, and I know of a few cases where the law won out. But that does not change the fact there are quite a few people who will attempt to push anyway.

  23. Because the Holy Ghost has testified of its truthfulness, and they keep faithful to it. It is why I go. So I don't wonder why people attend, the answer is really simple. We will have to agree to disagree with this. Unanswered questions are simply the mask hiding what is really happening -- mind and heart. Reminds me of a young couple whose husband didn't attend. I asked why he didn't attend and he said I just have a lot of questions. When I asked what some of those questions were his response was, "I don't remember." In other words, I use my questions as an excuse to not attend and thus feel justified (rationalization) for their decision to leave.

    Prince Andrew

If you had been brought up in England and your family was not particularly anti-monarchy then you would get it. To "Middle England" (by which I mean the conservative middle and upper-working classes) the royals are seen as a kind of extended family. People gossip/winge about them in the same sort of way they do about Uncle Jim or Aunt Jenny. (Right now Prince Andrew is the "disgraceful uncle" who's brought embarrassment on the rest of the family.) As a kid, listening to the way grown-ups talked about the royals, I sometimes vaguely felt they really were our relatives.

  27. A question to think about, where is Zion these days? I would not say it is Salt Lake City. It has many members, but it also has a great deal who are VERY opposed to the church. I'd say the most stringently opposed and strongest contingent of those who directly oppose the Church (as opposed to simply might teach against joining it or otherwise) are in what some would call the Mormon Belt of the United States. I do not think that most people outside of that area even really care if one is a Mormon or not if they are not highly religious. On the otherhand, if they ARE in that area, it could become an issue fare more than elsewhere. In that light, where is the Zion which they will flee to, or is it figurative. If it is figurative than how will this operate in creating safety? A reimplementation of the Law of Consecration and the United Order where all those who are Members own nothing but contribute in their assigned jobs (and work and jobs were in many instances assigned) and receive as according to their needs, each in the area of their ward or stake as needed...or something else?

  29. Thing is, LDS teachings are Biblical, and quite plain, if you understand them through modern revelation. The King Follett sermon is a prime example. The introduction to the sermon by Joseph Smith says: The teaching of Joseph Smith are as plain in the Bible as any traditional belief, if understood through revelation. Smith didn't teach three heavens from the Book of Mormon or the Doctrine and Covenants, but from 1 Corinthians 15, but with a revealed understanding. The nature of the spirit world is from 2 Peter. Eternal marriage and temple ordinances from Genesis, etc. etc. Some "plain and precious" truths were lost over time, but I believe Smith fully believed in the truthfulness of the Bible, and that our "odd" teachings are plainly taught there.

  31. This makes me wonder why anyone still goes to this church. Everyone sins. I have to disagree. Sin is not the cause of people leaving the church. I think they leave the church because they had a question and didn't get an answer that satisfied them. People remain active in church as long as their questions do not become the focus of their satisfaction. There are a lot of questions that cannot be answered right now. Most people who face these questions and stay are willing to accept that we don't have all the answers and will wait for a brighter day. Some people just ignore their questions and some people make their questions a hill they are willing to die over. It seems that once a person is confronted with the dilemma of a void instead of an answer, the wound festers and gets infected so that after a time, all the person can see is all that is wrong or is perceived to be wrong with the church. But there are some who leave because they can do better outside the church than they can inside the church, I mean money-wise. There is the lure of instant popularity among a group of people who are very hungry for dirty laundry. I was listening to one disaffected member who spent a good deal of time explaining to these hungry listeners about how he cheated on his wife because the Holy Ghost told him too. I had to wonder how far these people were willing to go to get their dirt. He was very popular even though he wasn't a person who I would think was trustworthy.
