  1. If you're feeling judged in this thread, please remember that your OP was asking for judgment. If you're feeling judged at church, my experience has been that most people are too busy taking care of their own families to examine the room and see who takes the sacrament and who doesn't. That's not to say they don't care if you don't attend your meetings. I wouldn't be surprised if the elders quorum presidency has counciled together on how they can better serve you.

  2. I've always looked askance at educators and public or institutional education in general. Easy to do as a homeschooling dad. Then one day I overheard a group of teachers talking amongst themselves. One of them said something to the tune of "You know, if I fail at everything else, if I could just get them to understand the difference between their opinions on how things should be, and how things actually are, I'll call that success." I realized I probably have more allies in the effort to educate my kids than I had previously assumed. So yeah, I pretty much agree with Traveler's 3 failures, but I'll still be grateful for every genuine effort and caring educator out there.

  5. How the heck does a joke about a tea-named ink morph into "You're making light of the WoW.", "Which loopholes to the WoW are OK?", and "God's revelations are outdated."? Sigh. Fortunately, I only have about .5mL left of this ink, so the clock is ticking on tea jokes. I'll have to rate the remainder of my ink names for joke-safeness.

    Failures of education

I thought for fun I would list some critical areas that are not covered in our educational system – that have catastrophic effects on our society. Feel free to comment, add your own or defend our educational system as the example to the world and all following generations. The first great failure – personal finances; especially the devastating effect of debt. With real life examples of how a person can purchase a house hold item on sale for $500 with credit and end up paying $20,000 in interest and penalties. Also teach asset management allowing individuals to turn income extractions into income additions. In short – how to manage income to maximize benefits. Something more than a how to balance a bank account. Second great failure – physical education. More than exercise activity students should be taught cardio training and also nutrition (more than just food groups) and effects of various diets and exercise – under the notion that everyone follows a diet and exercise routine; so the purpose of education is to clearly understand the known and documented results of whatever diet and exercise one chooses. Third great failure – religious education. Most seem to think that religion should not be included in public or private education (with the exception of their own particular religious preference). I have long believed that history cannot be understood or properly studied without understanding the religious context of the time and place of the historical events. Most often religious beliefs are only taught with great prejudice and bias as an effort to color history or present religious thinking in a light not applicable to the historical events. There is very little education that ties historic turns directly to specific religious beliefs. I am convinced that very few are willing to study history and religion together as cause and effect. That they have preconceived ideas of specific religious notions with no clue how such beliefs impact history. The Traveler

  9. If the adoption agency is a "faith" based agency (i.e. Catholic, Christian, etc...) then they have every right to deny a adoption according to their values and morals. If the adoption agency is a public agency then they should follow the laws of the land and not discriminate. So I agree with the sentiment you have provided; although, I would agree with this couple in letting other Mormons know that if they are looking to adopt they can look at other agencies beside this one -- especially if the only reason is because they were Mormon. This is an excellent point, and honestly they should be able to openly say religions they do discriminate against without any unjust recourse. They can discover this through online application or even paper applications. They can provide this as a notification. Sadly, there are organizations and agencies who are looking for opportunities to bring out a litigation if they feel discriminated against due to their personal decision of life choices. Our world is drawing closer and closer toward the following verse of scripture, "Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility." In connection with the following, "And if ye shall say there is no law, ye shall also say there is no sin. If ye shall say there is no sin, ye shall also say there is no righteousness. And if there be no righteousness there be no happiness. And if there be no righteousness nor happiness there be no punishment nor misery."

    Failures of education

Well I am sitting pretty on the glorious Millenial generation so I don’t have too much to compare against, but from what I see of myself and my generation, I completely agree. I look back in my life and I don’t have a clue of how I could have even sought out the opportunities you had.

  11. Ezekiel 37 (stick of Joseph/stick of Judah) is one. But it’s important to note that non-LDS Biblical scholars have perfectly plausible—even persuasive—explanations of these passages that have nothing to do with the Book of Mormon. They’re great passages of faith-bolstering dual prophecy; but I wouldn’t use them as proof-texts.

I’ll add: - Philosophy (intro levels), so many people don’t have the ability to think deeply about anything. Philosophy increases one’s ability of introspection and decision making. - Work. Not sure how this would be “taught”, maybe if there could be some incentive to have children in school to work by their own choice for wages... but not sure how to keep that on the bounds of the law. - Microsoft Excel

  16. You are active by the Church’s own definition. Dont let the naysayers of this forum discourage you. Your activity will increase gradually as you start taking your children to their classes. The very fact that you are trying is enough. The idea that you are becoming unworthy is from Satan. You are making progress , keep the faith.

  17. WOW needs an update. The coffee and tea thing needs to go away. Totally obsolete. There are a lot of recent studies extolling the virtues of coffee and even Consumer Reports expounded on its benefits recently. Tea has also been found to be beneficial Kind of like the reasons for keeping Kosher are no longer valid, we need a new revelation IMNSHO.

    Laws vs Commandments

First I would ask a question - who claimed to be the "way"? Now look at Genesis 3:24. In particular for the responsibility of the Cherubim in the final phrase of verse 24. Now look at Revelation 19 verses12 - 21. Who judges mankind with fire and a sword? The Traveler

  23. You feel the Spirit because the Lord loves you and because your heart, despite your sins, is attuned to him enough to still feel it and be receptive to it. I, too, have felt the Spirit in my life at times when I was not worthy. The Lord loves us more than we can comprehend, of that I can testify. At times he may possibly be "slow to hear" the cries of those who have transgressed, so to speak (as mentioned in Mosiah), but he never abandons us and his hand is extended towards us always. Usually it is we who abandon him. You do not need to choose between the Church and your boyfriend. That is a false choice and frankly, a deception the Adversary would have you be deluded in. The real choice is righteous living vs. sexual immorality. If your boyfriend can't accept you being chaste - that is his decision. The other thing is.....marriage was invented for a reason...................not saying you guys should just go and get hitched because you want sex. But I think a more mature perspective on your relationship is probably in order (sorry if that sounds judgmental, just trying to give point blank advice. Maybe you are already thinking of these things I'm about to mention). One that includes long term views of commitment and where things are going to go. Do you want to have sex with someone you will not marry? Will you marry him? Do you love him? Then what's stopping you? Will he join? Does he love you? What's stopping him? All pertinent questions to consider and follow through on. Heavy lifting, I know. But that's life, I suppose. I wish you the best. The Lord loves you, never forget.

    Stake president

Why? She's not LDS. She has no ecclesiastical reason to go to the bishop, and since the bishop is subordinate to the stake president, it doesn't seem logical to go to him. Look, I suspect the OP is simply nonsense. It is certainly possible that a stake president is stepping out on his wife, but the odds are low, and I don't take the word of a random internet newbie. But given the situation presented, going to the bishop simply does not seem a reasonable course of action.

  27. I tend to agree. What I don`t like about this story is how far things went along letting the family get emotionally invested before pulling the rug out from under them at the last minute. I would much prefer an upfront honest policy of, ``we don`t allow Mormons to use our services`` so that people would know. It`s the same with the same-sex wedding cake business, I have no problem with a baker telling someone that they won`t make the cake, I do have a problem with them letting them believe they will make the cake and then at the last minute stating they won`t.

  28. Honestly I have no problem with a business or agency choosing to withhold services for whatever reasons. Which means I have no problem with an adoption agency that refuses service to Mormons and I have no problem with a Baker or Florist that refuses to do a gay wedding. What I have a problem with is the hypocrisy (on either side). Religion is a protected class just like Sexual orientation. So those that are outraged by this but not by the baker or florist Shame on you, Hypocrite. For those that who are not outraged by this but where by the bakers and florist again shame on you, Hypocrite. Of course I don't think this will be more then a blip on the news cycle and I doubt any lawsuits will happen... so Shame on those hypocritical groups too

  29. What I despair of seeing in the world is honesty and integrity. Of course, I'd like to see that from those who call themselves Saints, too. But it rankles when we are excoriated for "homophobia" (asinine word that it is), then on the other hand are openly discriminated against because we are too politically incorrect. But the two-faced duplicity of the world is to be expected. The Lord condemned hypocrisy among the chosen people, but I don't remember him getting too upset about the hypocrisy of the Gentiles. It's almost as if he expected them to act like children of Perdition. It's those who claim to be followers of God that he expects to act better than mere animals. We should fight against such corruption, of course, but we should never be so naive as to be surprised when dogs act like dogs, bears act like bears, and fallen, wicked humans act like fallen, wicked humans.

  30. Welcome, @fairysmile! Please, please go see your bishop right away. The longer you wait, the harder it will seem, and the less likely you'll do it. The longer that goes on, the more likely other things will start to go wrong. Right now, your sin gives Satan an "in" - take that away from him! And the only way to do that is to go see your bishop. It will be like a burden lifted and things will be better after the process is over. If your boyfriend isn't a member, please consider having him meet with some male church members who can explain to him the seriousness of sexual sin so that he can work with you and not against you. If he is a member, well, he should be off to see his bishop to.
